| Session Leader Summary for Wed Jan 27, 1999 MP: 206 Restart Operations 1999 SL: wolfe PO: Snipes Asst: Irby EO: Silva,Cochran,Dekow This run was a continuation of the attempts to clean up the machine and get plasmas. The goals, like yesterday, were to get to rampdown, and get two plasmas in a row. As was true yesterday, the goals were not met. However, we did increase the frequency of current rise (plasmas) to the point of getting four of the last eight shots, including some alternation. We also had one shot (#5) that made it into current regulation at 630kA with a loop voltage below 2V, and died due to a vertical instability. All shots were short, the longest being #5 at 274msec. Successful current rises were obtained on shots #3,5,16,18,21,23. The best shot of the day, and of the campaign, was #5, which got into flattop (why didn't I make that the goal for the day) and actually had a relatively low loop voltage, and sawteeth. This shot actually diverted before succumbing to a vertical instability. The early oh voltage was scanned (from the starting point of 990126024) over +/- 50V to try to cure the current hesitation between 10 and 20msec, without noticeable effect. The flux loop F21, which had gone flakey at the end of yesterday's run, magically fixed itself and was ok all day. We lost a couple more Bp coils, one of which, BP16_BC, was used in the hybrid. We replaced this with BP16_DE, and updated the hybrid tree and all predictors (shot 7). Note that all shots prior to 990127007 will require recalculation of predictors. Bob recovered BP20_JK, previously reported dead, and put it back in the Processed BP set (shot 13). Unfortunately, he also incorrectly put BP14_JK,which no longer exists, into the processed set, and this was not corrected until shot 20. Codes which rely on processed Bp data will have errors on shots 13-19, including the plasmas on shot 16 and 18. The EF1L supply was failing to follow its demand (100-200V negative offset) for much of the day. The problem vanished after shot 14, when the engineers put a probe on a sensitive point. We had one unexplained gas system dud on shot 15. No gas pulsed. On 16, all was ok, and we got a plasma. There still seems to be a discrepancy between the hybrid ZCUR predictor, which thinks the plasma is close to its programmed position of -.015, and Ian's flux reconstructions, EFIT, and the xray centroid, which claim the plasma is above the midplane. This discrepancy is not explained by the BP14 error on shots #13-19. It may be indicative of offsets in the hybrid. More fun tomorrow... |

Depending on our success rate, we may want to exercise the option of between-shot-ECDC. Summary: Overall, it was an O.K. run to try to clean up the machine. Six plasmas were obtained, though they were rather short. Shot 990127005 was the best lasting to 0.275 sec well into flattop at 0.6 MA. It was a sawtoothing plasma that disrupted due to a vertical instability. However, the disruption knocked loose the connections to a BP coil so that we had to replace the dead BP coil with another coil and recalculate all predictors that use BP coils. So, you should not copy anything before shot 7. All plasmas were very dirty and several fizzles were required to clean up before we could get plasma again. However, the machine does seem to be improving since plasmas were obtained on both shots 21 and 23 with only one fizzle in between. The next run may want to start from shot 990127023. Shot 1: Copied shot 990126024 which uses segment 1 and segment 4 and has 600 kA at 6 x 10^19 m^-2 nl04. Moved start of RCUR outward drift to 0.28 sec from 0.17 sec and adjusted a few later points to make a smooth change in RCUR. Increased early pulsed gas at 0.04 sec slightly. Shot 2: Try again with no changes. Shot 3: Change Br offset from 3 mT to 2 mT. Plasma. Disrupted at 0.15 sec. Reached 0.5 MA. Shot 4: Fizzle. A lot of dirt was evolved by the plasma on shot 3. Shot 5: Try again. Got plasma. Disrupted at 0.274 sec and reached flattop at 0.6 MA. Vertical instability at 0.274 sec. Shot 6: Reduced clearin from -0.008 to -0.015 m. Fizzle. Problem with BP16_BC on shot 5. Shot 7: Changed BP16_BC to BP16_DE on the hybrid input Called all algorithms on all segments that use the BP coils to recalculate them using BP16_DE instead of BP16_BC. Also turned off nl04 feedback control because the TCI is dead for shot 7. Fizzle. Shot 8: Dropped Br offset from 2 mT to 1.5 mT. Reduced pre-puff from 22 msec to 18 msec. Fizzle. Shot 9: Fizzle. Shot 10: Dropped pre-puff to 16 msec. TF cooling quadrant 1 valve is stuck. Short delay to fix the valve. TCI is back. NL04 controller turned back on. Fizzle. Shot 11: Increased Br offset back to 2 mT. Returned pre-puff to 18 msec. Fizzle. Shot 12: Increased EF4 current before t=0 from -1355 to -1370 A to make Bz about 1 mT more negative. Fizzle! Shot 13: Decreased EF4 current to -1340 A since the previous change seemed to make Bz worse. Br also changed on the previous shot. To compensate, change Br offset to 2.5 mT from 2 mT. Fizzle! Shot 14: Changed EF4 current again to -1325 A. Fizzle again. Shot 15: Put the EF4 current back to -1355 A and then increased the OH1 and OH2 voltages at 3 msec and 5 msec by 50 V on OH1 and 10 V on OH2. EF1 power supplies checked and an offset was removed. No gas! Dud. Shot 16: Br offset changed from 2.5 mT to 2 mT. Plasma. Disrupted at 0.13 sec. very slow current rise. Shot 17: Try going the other way on the OH1 and OH2 voltages. Dropped the OH1 voltage by 100 V and the OH2 voltages by 20 V at 3 and 5 msec. Fizzle. Shot 18: Br changed by itself on shot 17. To compensate, change Br offset from 2 mT to 1.5 mT. Plasma. Disrupted at 0.11 sec. Shot 19: Change Br offset back to 1 mT from 1.5 mT. Fizzle! Shot 20: Fizzle! Shot 21: Changed Br offset back to 2 mT. Plasma. Disrupted at 0.137 sec. Shot 22: Clearin changed back to -0.015 m just in case that is causing the problems after segment switch when we get plasmas. Fizzle! Shot 23: Try again with no changes. Plasma. Disrupted at 0.14 sec. Apparently, the clearin change did not do very much, but maybe a bit better than shot 21. Scorecard: 23 shots 16 fizzles 1 dud because the gas valve failed 6 plasmas |

| Jan 27 1999 07:32:50:043AM | Steve Wolfe | Checked the resistance of the F21 coil at the patch panel. Seems to be steady. We will see how it behaves on the first shot, and monitor it through the day. If the connector is still bad, we will need a cell access to try to remedy it. It may be necessary to modify software to eliminate it. See My notes in MHD topic entered Jan 20, 1999. | |

| Jan 27 1999 05:17:02:483PM | 990127023 | Joseph Snipes | Summary: Overall, it was an O.K. run to try to clean up the machine. |
