This run was a continuation of the attempts to clean up the machine and get
plasmas. The machine is cleaning up slowly. Today we had 7 plasmas, and four
of those made it to current flattop. These tended to have a hard disruption
just when they were starting to divert. The current was increased to 720kA and
the pulse length to 570msec.

Successful current rises were obtained on shots #3,5,7,10,14,18,and 20.

We found a rough criterion for shots to have current rise in terms of levels
of several impurity masses on the RGA. A necessary condition, today, was that
the following masses be less than these values:
Mass P
---- ----
32 1.1e-9
28 7.2e-9
18 4.2e-9
44 5.0e-9
A criterion that the torus pressure be less than 1.5e-7 was not found to be
sufficient on shot 21, which was run with GV3 open.

Ian did a lot of massaging of the startup, including current and voltage
tweaks on the OH's,EF1's, and EF4. It is not clear that the resulting startup
is better than before, but it is not demonstrably worse. The null and field
evolution look better, although the Bz rise seems quite slow.

The best shot of the day, and of the campaign so far, was #20, which got into
flattop at 700kA and actually had a relatively low loop voltage, and
sawteeth. This was an attempt to run a limited discharge, after noting that
previous shots had disrupted as they began to get close to diverting. This
shot in fact also got close to being diverted, although about 100ms later than
the earlier shots.

In diagnosing why the shot was not strongly limited, it was discovered that
the CLEARIN predictor factor was too large (2.7e-5 compared to a maximum
allowed value of 2.32878e-5). This value had been there on the original shot
from 980220, and was not noticed yesterday when predictors were
recalculated. Having a FACTOR greater than the maximum results in an invalid
predictor being used in the hybrid. In point of fact, the hybrid predicted
value for CLEARIN on shot 20 differed from that reported by Ian's flux
predictor in the tree by about a factor of two. The factor was corrected for
shot 21.

All future shots should be inspected to verify that the CLEARIN factor is in
bounds. Presumably, to run an old shot and get the same result as before, the
uncorrected factor can be used, but it must be understood that the quantity
being controlled is (and was) not really CLEARIN, and the usual interpretation
of the error on this wire, e.g. from PHYS_A_OUT, is not correct.

Since we did not get a plasma on shot 21, we have not been able to confirm
that the factor error was responsible for the discrepancy between the hybrid
value and the tree value. It is recommended that shot 21 be used as the
starting point for tomorrow's run.

Summary
_______
This run continued to confirm that obtaining plasma current rise is very
well correlated with the base pressure, particularly of CO/CO2. The Irby
Criterion, p_o < 2.5e-7 is a good predictor of success.

The field null was fiddled with to improve the gradients. This did not
break anything, but is not necessarily a big step forward. Still the null
obtained on shots 20 and 21 looks good for these rather dirty conditions.

Plasmas up to .57s were obtained which clearly were stirring up a lot of junk.
These were obtained with the gas valve closed from about .16s onward, but
the wall fueling was fierce, and confirmed by the observation of H/D ratios
of order unity. Point is that the machine is still not at all clean.

Scorecard. (Sorry this was broken by MDS plus changes)
__________
21 shots 7 plasmas, 13 fizzles, 1 PS dud.

CII=.018, and a current hesitation.
Till .57s. Marfe still present and runaway density rise.
Actually this plasma nearly diverts at the end. Clearin is not very
well controlled. It turns out the factor was incorrectly set for this
wire.

Reset clearin wire factor. Check all the others.
Next shot will be taken with the cryopump open, to try to demonstrate
whether it is the gas-phase pressure or just the outgassing rate that
determines the ability to get current rise.

CII=.025, 32kA only, but zmeter signal. This was not close to going.
Base pressure 1.2e-7. 28=1.09e-8 44= 8.55e-9, versus 7e-9, 5e-9 as successful
levels.
This shot satisfies the Irby base pressure criterion but fizzles anyway.
That tends to indicate that it is not the gas-phase levels that are the issue,
however the Carbon partial pressures are fairly high.

Base pressure was 1.8e-7. Plasma current never reaches 40kA.
CII=.021. Breakdown at 5.2 ms.

CII=.018, and a current hesitation.
