RUN 990204 MP 209 Excercise the Flappers and Associated Diagnostics

PURPOSE:

Obtain information on, (1) effect of the flapper on neutral densities in
divertor and main chamber

(2) effect of flapper on argon screening

SCANS:

(1) shots 4 - 18: Ohmic density scan, fixed strike pt geometry, fixed
argon puff, looking at the effect on neutral pressures at various
locations and argon penetration factor as measured by HIREX and
divertor RGA.

(2) shots 19 - 22: Scan of strike pt location on plate for fixed plasma
density

(3) shots 23 - 25: Start discharge with flapper open, close abruptly at
1.0 s, continue density feedback past 1.0 s to maintain density and
to fuel the divertor plenum, effectively giving a transient
'puff and pump' experiment.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

(1) For the same plasma density, the main chamber pressures are unaffected
by the flapper. This is consistent with earlier conclusions that
main chamber pressure is determined primarily by main chamber recycling
and not by neutral escape from the divertor.

(2) Divertor pressure (B-Bottom) is reduced by a factor of approximately
two for flapper open, at all plasma densities.

(3) Divertor pressure at E-Bottom (which is an open divertor) is lower
than B-Bottom (by factor approx 2), and is only weakly affected
by the flapper (20%). This is what one would expect given that gas at E
is free to flow to the main chamber unimpeded.

(4) Argon penetration factor as defined by # Ar in plasma / # Ar atoms
released is on average a factor of 2 higher with flapper open.

(5) Transient 'Puff and Pump' (shots 23 - 25) to be analyzed still.

Physics operator summary for 990204

Run 990204 was in support of Mini-Proposal #209 - Exercise Flappers ...
The purpose of this experiment is to obtain preliminary information on flapper
operation, its effect on divertor and midplane gas pressures and on
argon/neon screening efficiency. In addition, a considerable number of
relevant diagnostics need to be checked out. Only Ohmic discharges are
considered.

The run today was a success. All shots with power supplies produced plasmas.
These went a long way toward fulfilling MP209. See the session leader's
summary for a discussion of the physics results.

Startup was not touched today and no between shot ECDC was performed. The
results were breakdowns around 6ms with good current rises (a few shots had
very slight hesitations). Most shots today disrupted in the ramp-down portion
of the discharge. This time was pushed out by slowing down the negative ramp
of the CLEARIN waveform. The disruptions that occured before ramp-down were
due either to aggressive gas puffing or the movement of the strike points up
to the nose area or some combination of both. The strike point was drifting
up the outer plate. This was fixed by drawing an anti-drifting waveform
and/or extending the EF2_BY_EF4 waveform to 1.4s. However, the outer strike
point did not get very deep into the divertor.

WARNING: The shots today are programmed for flat-top lasting to 1.4s. Shot 26
has a PG1 puff of 200ms @ 0.6s. Do not use this shot without removing
the puff.

Engineering, computing, and diagnostics today:
A convectron on the TCI gate valve was a bit loose. This caused the
gate valve to oscillate during shots, causing a loss of some channels.
This was remedied by forcing the gate valve to stay open. The EF3
fuse problem was "solved" and two test shots taken to make sure. The
OH1 pulled out after one disruption. Other than that, a good day
for the power systems. One CAMAC hang cleared by JAS. A few
intermittent data losses today.

Scorecard: 26 shots = 22 plasmas + 0 fizzles + 0 dud + 4 tests

RUN 990204 MP 209 Excercise the Flappers and Associated Diagnostics

PURPOSE:

Obtain information on, (1) effect of the flapper on neutral densities in
divertor and main chamber

(2) effect of flapper on argon screening

We will look at a range of plasma densities in Ohmic discharges.
We will run pairs of discharges, first with flapper closed for
the entire discharge and then flapper open in a comparison discharge.

plasmas: Ip = 0.8 MA (later 1.0 MA), Bt = 5.3 T, D2,
long flat (to >= 1.2 sec, depending
on volt-seconds, we would like long flat-tops for the divertor
argon signal to come to equilibrium)

nl04: feedback controlled density, start with 1.0e20 m-2,
go down to 0.5, go up to strong detachment density (2.0),
approximately 5 densities to be used

argon: standard puff at 0.3
