| Session Leader's summary of run 990210 MP#208 - Burping Probe and Plume Imaging Systems Commissioning Physics Operator: Marmar Session Leader: LaBombard The goal of this run was to calibrate and test the fast-scanning burping probe and the video systems used to view the resultant impurity injection plumes. The video equipment was not ready for this run so we focussed on calibrating and testing the fast-scanning burping probe. A series of test shots were taken just before the run, injecting various amounts of ethylene (C2H4) and freon (CCl2F2) into the torus chamber. Also a test shot of freon injection was taken between shot 10 and 11 during the run and two test shots were taken after the run. The following tests shots are stored in the edge tree: Ethylene tests: (per injection) Shot ~Molecules plenum pressure trigger duration injections 6073 2x10^16 (C2H4) 11.8 torr -1.5 1.5 0.5,.8,1.1 6074 2x10^16 (C2H4) 14.7 torr -1.0 1.25 0.5,.8,1.1 6075 8x10^16 (C2H4) 20.5 torr -.75 1.1 0.5,.8,1.1 6076 1.9x10^17 (C2H4) 31.3 torr -0.5 0.75 0.5,.8,1.1 6077 4x10^17 (C2H4) 51.6 torr -.25 0.5 0.5,.8,1.1 6078 7x10^17 (C2H4) 79.1 torr 0.0 0.5 0.5,.8,1.1 Freon tests: *Note - pressure (->molecules) is in D2 equivalent. All shots, with the exception of shots 23 and 24, where nominally NL04=1x10^20, 0.8 MA discharges. Some RF conditioning was done from 1 to 1.2 sec. The first 7 shots were used to condition the probe head. By shot 7, arcing on the probe head (detected by the current collection) was reduced and it was decided to start gas injections. Since we did not have the camera system to look at carbon plumes, we did not inject any ethylene. Instead, we focussed on optimizing freon injections so that HIREX and VUV spectrometers could detect it. To our surprize, we needed to inject quite a large amount of freon in order to see anything on the spectrometers. The magnitude of the freon puff was successively increased on shots 8-12. The best gas-puff setup was obtained by shot 14. On first look, the results are a bit puzzling: No difference in Cl screening for different injection depths...The data from discharges 14 on need to be looked at in detail. 990210008: 7.3 torr setup, 2mm outside LCFS - no effect 990210009: 15.6 torr setup, 2mm outside LCFS - no effect 990210010: no injection -> did a test freon injection between shots (edge 6086) 990210011: 34.5 torr setup, 2 mm outside LCFS - small injection seen on 2pi, edge x-ray array, HIREX (He-like Cl) and VUV (Li-like F) 990210012: 71.8 torr setup, 2 mm outside LCFS - big perturbations: See effect on NL04, HIREX, VUV, edge x-ray, central X_ray, central ECE, G-side ratiomatic 990210013: 48 torr setup, 2 mm outside LCFS - good signals on HIREX, VUV. Start of injection depth scans with fixed freon puff and fixed plasma: Best setup: 48 torr setup with reduce pulse length (-0.3 trig, 0.7 duration) 990210014: 3, 5 mm outside LCFS 990210015: 17, 22 mm outside LCFS 990210017: > 30 mm outside LCFS 990210018: 3, 6 mm outside LCFS 990210019: 0, 0 mm outside LCFS 990210020: 17, 18 mm outside LCFS 990210021: 3, 1 mm INSIDE LCFS 990210022: 17, 18 mm outside LCFS Attempt at higher density: 990210024: 17, 24 mm outside LCFS |

| #46 of 49 OPS Date: 10-FEB-1999 19:14 Expires: 24-FEB-1999 00:00 From: SPANNA::MARMAR Subj: Physop run summary 990210 Physop summary 990210 EO Silva/DeKow SL LaBombard PO Marmar/Mossessian Miniproposal 208: Burping Probe and Plume Imaging Systems Commissioning The goals of today's run are to calibrate and test the fast-scanning burping probe. The run plan: 1) Calibrate gas puffs of ethylene and freon into vacuum, using the FSP NINJA system to puff through the puffer probe. This will start early (around 7:30 am) and can be done without running shot cycles. We will puff controlled amounts of ethylene and freon gas into the vacuum chamber to correlate quantity injected with plenum fill pressures. Also the valve timing needs to be optimized for these gases. 2) The plasma experiments require 2 different discharges to be programmed and repeated as needed. Both discharges will be diverted, ohmic 0.8 MA plasma. Discharge (A) - Low to medium recycling divertor discharge Flat-top density with NL04 less than 1.0x10^20 m^-2 Discharge (B) - Medium recycling to high recycling to detached divertor discharge Flat-top density with NL04 greater than 1.2x10^20 m-2 The shot sequence will be determined as the run progresses. We will vary the amount of gas injected and the insertion depth of the scanning probe. In the case of freon injection, Cl concentrations in the core will be monitored with HIREX. Part 1 was successfully completed, and first plasma was obtained before 10:00 am. Brian puffed freon into many discharges; measurements of fluorine were made with the McPherson and measurements of chlorine were made with HIREX. The startup continued to be very reliable, with current rise obtained on all 23 attempts that had all power supplies working. 2 of those shots disrupted before the probe insertion times. The rest made it to or beyond rampdown. The only change to the startup programming was made before shot 23; it was a 1 mT tweak to the BR_0 offset. The RF, which was piggybacking, got up to 3 MW injected (shot 24); heating was clear; stored energy increases were roughly consistent with L-Mode. There were some hints of dithers on a few shots (20,22,24). H/D ratios were the lowest of the campaign so far, typically in the range from 0.05 to 0.25; on shot 24, the ratio peaked during the RF at about 0.18. The machine ran reliably at nl_04=1e20. Attempts to raise the density to 1.2e20 were met with some resistance by the plasma. Shot 23 disrupted early because of overly aggressive deuterium gas puffing between 0.1 and 0.3 seconds. There was much tweaking to the rampdown; shot 18 made it to 200 kA before the major disruption, although it exhibited minor disruptions on the way down. Most of the rampdowns were done with the plasma remaining diverted. After raising the density to 1.2e20, the plasmas disrupted at 500 kA in rampdown. Engineering systems: 2 shots were lost to power supply problems. There was no TF on shot 16. There was no EF4 on shot 25. Summary: 23 plasmas 2 duds ---------- 25 cycles |
