Run Summary for Thurs 990211

MP 206 Restart Operation
214 ICRF conditioning
211 VUV calibration
SL: wolfe
PO: Hutch Asst. PO:Parker
EO: Silva/Dekow

Since we haven't boronized yet, this run was mainly icrf conditioning,
and a little VUV calibration left over from Tuesday. RF had problems with
the modulator and gain on transmitter #1, but eventually got some shots
with over 2MW total. VUV calibration was completed except for a Carbon line
with poor statistics.

Ian set up a startup with high pressure (20psi) in B-top, for use when we may
need additional puffer valves in segment 2. This seemed to work, with a pulse
length of 6msec.

We had several brief H-modes, which tripped the RF out. Threshold is somewhere
between 1 and 2MW. The signal from the RF loading feedback circuit is screwed
up and NOT ready for use.

H/D started the day at less than .1, and ended up over .2 at the end of the
RF.

The last two shots, at reduced density, ramped all the way down, the last to
1.83sec.

Startup was not quite as robust today as recently; there were two early
fizzles, and one late in the day. Final stats were 25/30 with two tests and
three fizzles.

Boronization will be run tonight. More fun and games tomorrow.

Physop Summary 990211

PO hutch

MP 206, 214 Startup and RF conditioning.

Accomplished:
____________

1. Got reliable gas fill with 20 psi D2 pressure in the prefill
valve. Pulse gas 4, B-top appears to have little or no delay opening.
6ms puff is about right for .07mTorr, and 1ms step gives about .015mTorr
difference. Pulse is at -1sec now, to ensure correct reading.
Recommend that 990211030 segment 1 be used for future plasmas.

2. Completed some reproducible shots for JT.

3. RF conditioning. Transmitter 2 seems to be working reliably (but perhaps
not heating all that well). H/D was about 0.1 today. Transmitter 1 had
many electronic problems and does not seem to be reliable.

4. Several H-modes were obtained with target densities in the region of
1e20 nl04, at a threshold in the region of 2MW.

5. Showed some suspicious correlation between disruptions and Argon.

6. Obtained a ramp-down practically all the way, with Ar off and nl04 set
at .9e20.

7. Observed many impurity injections. These may or may not have been caused
by the RF, but the disruptivity was fairly bad today.

Cell access for TS. Power room access for RF.

In segment 2 insert programmed voltages on EF1 100V, and OH2 20V.
These are supposed to help the power supplies follow the demand better
during the shot, so the feedback does not have to work so hard.
This ought to get us a zxl/zxu nearer to what we are asking for.

Succeeded in avoiding the EF2 zeroing.
However, now EF1L is zeroing out and suddenly waking up again.
Not clear that this is really the cause of the ramp-down disruption. There
is lots of gas.

EF4 to -1275 from -1290.

3 H-modes.

No changes

990211030 HUTCH PHYSICS_OPERATOR Feb 11 1999 5:09:11:076PM
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Plasma. Runs till 1.81s, most of the way down. EF2s still seem to be
driven into inversion. H-mode threshold about 2MW.
ZXL proportional gain steps to zero at 1.7s. This seems the only candidate
for the cause of the power supplies swings starting at that time.

Miniproposal 206: Restart Operations.
214 D & E port RF commissioning.

Physop: Hutchinson.

Overnight ECDC in D2.
***** Please ensure a sweep all the way out to the outer wall. *******

Engineering setup:

Power supply setup as on 990210

TF under hybrid control

Gas setup -
****** fill B-top with 20 psi of DEUTERIUM Hybrid enabled ******

Please note this B-top pressure is a major difference from the 6 psi
normally run. The intention is to develop start-ups with decent
pressure in this valve so we can use it for additional gas puffs
during the shot.

fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid enabled
fill C-side with 30 psi of DEUTERIUM Hybrid enabled

The following gate valves should be enabled, assuming no vacuum problems:

ECE, VUV

Plan

We will want to do one or two gas-only tests to begin with to verify
that we can get sensible pressures with the 20 psi in the B-top and
shorter pulses on the valve, of course.

Since the boronization will not have taken place, the remainder of the
run will be devoted to RF conditioning by putting on the RF at
managable power levels for long durations (0.5s or more). If the RF is
reproducible, we would anticipate the plasmas will be also.

We will also try to pick up the calibration shots that Jim Terry is still
missing from Tuesday's run.

Feb 11 1999 09:51:57:013AM990211005Ian HutchinsonFizzle. Breakdown slightly later.
Fill pressure is exactly right and reproducible.

Lower br offset from 3.5 to 3.0 mT.
Feb 11 1999 10:11:59:030AM990211006Ian HutchinsonPlasma, to 1.45s.
Substantial hesitation from 15 to 20ms.
Got some RF power, but no trace. Also camac error on the probes.

No changes
Feb 11 1999 10:35:56:403AM990211007Ian HutchinsonPlasma. 1MW RF. Some heating.

Tweak OH1 voltage down from 80V to 40V at 15ms.
Feb 11 1999 11:00:44:280AM990211008Ian HutchinsonPlasma. Got RF but camac errors again.

Feb 11 1999 11:19:22:827AM990211009Ian HutchinsonPlasma. Brick at .35s then it nearly recovers, but a big density rise
to 4e20(!) and then disrupts.

No changes.
Feb 11 1999 11:33:23:607AM990211010Ian HutchinsonPlasma. Disrupts at .46s. Very similar to previous shot.
Some big marfe event, or gas puff happens starting at .35s.
Initiation was rather bad this shot. Bz was somewhat higher.

Reduced the OH2 to 5 volts in this regoin of the plasma program.
Perhaps those voltage tweaks subtly changed the shape.
Feb 11 1999 11:46:44:327AM990211011Ian HutchinsonPlasma. RF tripping and retrying.

Move the rcur switched offset to 1.4s from 1.6 s.
RXL to 0 from .006m
Feb 11 1999 01:09:17:450PM990211012Ian HutchinsonPlasma to 1.4s
Feb 11 1999 12:13:10:950PM990211013Steve Wolfeshot 13: Wolfe taking over as PHYSOP while Ian is away; I killed his PCS session and am using my own.
Add some Ar for JR (to 30msec).
Change RXL program to ramp from .006 at .45 to 0 at 1.2sec
The disruption came before the RCUR change Ian made, so ...

plasma to 1.51 sec, no rf. strike is better, still a bit high at the end.
Try increasing the RXL sweep.

Feb 11 1999 12:35:34:340PM990211014Steve Wolfeshot 14: Move RXL to -.005 at t=1.2sec
plasma to 1.52sec, RXL does what I ask. It's on the floor a bit early, but JT is happy so
leave it alone.

See about the rampdown.
Feb 11 1999 12:58:28:293PM990211015Steve Wolfeshot 15: ZXL is ramping from -.015 to .032 between 1.2 and 1.51sec; slow that down
to go to +.01 at 1.51sec (about half as much motion)
plasma to 1.48sec. Still no RF
Feb 11 1999 01:05:20:403PM990211015Steve Wolfeshot 16: Change the ZXL ramp in rampdown the other way: +.04 at 1.5sec, .06 at 1.8sec
Feb 11 1999 01:08:09:373PM990211015Ian HutchinsonPlasma to 1.45s.
Feb 11 1999 01:29:21:123PM990211016Ian HutchinsonPlasma to 1.53s.

rcur offset switch moved to 1.2s.
Ramp EF4 down more quickly in the ramp-down to help EF2
Feb 11 1999 01:45:21:560PM990211017Ian HutchinsonPlasma disrupts at .88s. Brick at .83, may be the RF.

Move rcur 1mm inwards at .8s. See if the RF crowd notices.
EF4 to -1290A from -1285.
Feb 11 1999 02:00:18:437PM990211018Ian HutchinsonPlasma. Disrupts at 0.9s. Another big impurity injection. 2MW RF.

Raise pulse gas 3 to 50 from 40 during 50-100ms.
Turn off the B-side lower (Argon).
Feb 11 1999 02:17:58:530PM990211019Ian HutchinsonPlasma till 1.57 sec.

Early gas puff to 60.
Did some more EF4 tweaking in ramp down to try to help EF2.
Feb 11 1999 02:39:28:293PM990211020Ian HutchinsonPlasma till about 1.5s. Transmitter 2 alone gives 1.3 MW.
Succeeded in avoiding the EF2 zeroing.
However, now EF1L is zeroing out and suddenly waking up again.
Not clear that this is really the cause of the ramp-down disruption. There
is lots of gas.

EF4 to -1275 from -1290.
Early gas puff to 70.
Reenable pulse-gas 1.
Feb 11 1999 03:02:20:983PM990211021Ian HutchinsonPlasma. Disrupts at .56 sec. Nasty density rises starting .32s.
This shot is a black eye for argon (30 ms worth at 1 psi).

nl04 to .7 at .18s. The feedback seems to be easing off a bit early on the
pulse gas.
PG3 V to 60V. Perhaps we were giving more than enough.
Disable argon again.
Feb 11 1999 03:11:29:090PM990211022Ian HutchinsonPlasma. Does not disrupt.
Momentary 3MW of RF seems to induce an H-mode very briefly?

.8cm inward plasma shift at .5
Compensate for the offset jump at 1.2s.
Feb 11 1999 03:19:56:233PM990211023Ian HutchinsonPlasma. Disrupts at .82s. Several bricks. Suspect the RF.

No changes
Feb 11 1999 03:53:00:623PM990211024Ian HutchinsonPlasma disrupts at .87s. Bricks.

Change clearin to -.005 from -.008.
Feb 11 1999 03:53:43:890PM990211025Ian HutchinsonPlasma to 1.17s. Just survives the bite at .8s.

Initial gas puff to 65.
RF of transmitter 1 move to .8s from .6s.
Feb 11 1999 04:14:51:030PM990211026Ian HutchinsonPlasma to 1.6s. Several little H-modes at about 2MW, tripping out the RF.

No changes except RF tuning.
Feb 11 1999 04:21:51:107PM990211027Ian HutchinsonFizzle. Breakdown slightly late. Bz is noticeably higher. 6mT at .01s.

EF4 to -1285A
Feb 11 1999 04:38:26:060PM990211028Ian HutchinsonPlasma till .97. Little H-mode.

Lower density to .9e20 from 1.2e20. See if that helps to survive transitions
and whatever is being injected.
Feb 11 1999 04:54:25:793PM990211029Ian HutchinsonPlasma. Ramps down to 1.7s when the power supplies are inverted.
3 H-modes.

No changes
Feb 11 1999 05:09:11:077PM990211030Ian HutchinsonPlasma. Runs till 1.81s, most of the way down. EF2s still seem to be
driven into inversion. H-mode threshold about 2MW.
ZXL proportional gain steps to zero at 1.7s. This seems the only candidate
for the cause of the power supplies swings starting at that time.
