MP214 "ICRF Conditioning" Engineering Setup for 990212 Power supplies as for 990210018 Helium ECDC after overnight boronization TF under hybrid control Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid not enabled fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled The following gate valves should be enabled, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV Physics goals 1. Steady controlled power from both ICRF systems in L-mode. 2. Steady controlled power from both ICRF systems in H-mode. Yesterday the RF was running poorly without controlled RF output power. We added additional monitors to try to track down the problem. We will have power room access as needed to sort out ____________________________________________________________________________ Pressure: 21.9 PSI 22.7 PSI ST1: 540 PS1: 441 ST2: 2297 PS2: 963 PWR: 800 kW 1 MW 001 fizzle 002 fizzle 003 plasma with short H-mode, H/D reached #2 ran with one fault #1 ramped properly ST1: 578 PS1: 416 ST2: 2445 PS2: 993 004 plasma with short H-modes, H/D reached #2 ran with faults #1 ramped with entirely different gain (about 8x) ST1: 578 PS1: 412 ST2: 2448 PS2: 989 005 early disruption at 0.48 sec PF breaker pulled 006 #2 still excessive power #1 ran smoothly without interruption 007 backed out 008 magnet resistance fault swapped HP preamps 008 plasma good ramps in both #1 and #2 problem in #2 is not solved but we know it is not the HP preamp. recalculated E-port MW coefficients old: -.783495,.474106,-2.77058 new: -0.75454555,0.52070604,-2.8335327 Monitor HP signal generator on next output PWR: - ramp from 0.2-1.3 MW 009 plasma no power out of #1 010 plasma no power out of #1 HP generator output 1.54 V found error in #1 chain 011 plasma good ramp in #1 HP generator output 1.47 V 012 plasma good ramp in #1 HP generator output 1.47 V Change timing so D and E overlap recalculate MW coefficients for D-port old: [0,-1,0] new: [-0.45772295,0.20726647,-0.91921977] 013 plasma with short H-mode #1 and #2 ran together 014 plasma - 2.5 MW #1 ran without faults #2 ran with 2 faults ST1: 576 PS1: 425 ST2: 2249 PS2: 1063 015 plasma with short H-modes 016 plasma just one fault on #1 *********************** ****** SUMMARY ****** *********************** Troubleshooting FMIT#1 required most of the campaign to accomplish. The most likely problem is the signal generator. Once we put a splitter after the generator, the output power for a given voltage input became repeatable. Four discharges were then run where the combined output power was ~2.5 MW. Further testing of the signal generator is required to verify whether the signal generator is malfunctioning. The next issue to address is heating H-modes. Almost without exception the transmitters faulted when the H->L transition occurred. |

| Physics operator summary for 990212 EO: Silva PO: Goetz SL: Wukitch Run 990212 was in support of Mini-Proposal #214 - ICRF Conditioning. The RF cabal needs some shots to debug the feedback problems with transmitter #1. The run today was a success in that the RF cabal are homing in on the problems with transmitter #1. See the session leader's summary for a discussion of these results. The first two shots of the day had early breakdowns and resulted in strong fizzles with the plasmoid moving outward. After a ICEF4 tweak and a 2ms increase in the pre-puff duration, reliable startup was achieved for the remainder of the run. Breakdown times between 6 and 7ms with good current rises were obtained. Attempts were made to make the plasma ramp down further. Changes included running a limited plasma and keeping the plasma down (in ZCUR). Today it appeared that running a limited rampdown was more successful in getting the plasma current down than remaining diverted. The OH1 crossover caused one early disruption today. This occured after the rise rate of IP (segment 2) was slowed down. The IP ramp rate was increased (segment 2) and the problem became more manageable. The argon puff was moved back to 0.45s, which is after the crossover, and then slowly moved back (shot-to-shot) to 0.39s. No discernible difference in plasma performance was noted. Engineering, computing, and diagnostics today: TF power supply faulted during RECOOL. These faults were unexplained and the run proceeded. LOGBOOK was slow during a stretch today which cause a couple CYCLE hangs. SPANNA froze at one point during the run. This led to an unintended shot cycle which in turn caused a magnet resistance fault. Still some intermittent CAMAC lossed today.
