Physop Summary for 990331

MP#214 ICRF conditioning
SL: Wilson/Wukitch/Melby
PO: wolfe
EO: Cochrane, Silva, Dekow

The main goal of today's run was to get the D and E port ICRF systems running
again, after numerous mods during the maintenance interval. Progress was made,
although E-port had some kind of arc detection faults at the 0.2-0.5MW level.
Total power got up to 1.7MW. However, it was determined that there had been
arcing in the E-port transmission line, and the Thursday and Friday runs were
cancelled to facilitate repairs.

The machine condition seemed good, despite the He vent and ECDC. EDA H-modes
were readily obtained at about 1MW of RF power. The boronization originally
planned to follow the run was therefore cancelled.

There was a problem with the vacuum during cooldown. F-port seal began
leaking, and was purged with Ar. The leak got worse, bringing the base
pressure up to the high 10^(-5) scale. It was found that a heater had been
removed or turned down, causing a block of ice to form on one side of the
port. Tommy retorqued the flange (except for the bolts under the ice), and got
it to reseal.

Before attempting plasma operation, a series of power tests were run. An ECO
recommended by GA for the EFC chopper supply had been implemented on one gate
drive board. This tested out ok, and the engineers will duplicate the change
on the other three boards. A series of tf-only tests, at 50, 100, and 165kA
were run. The last of these, 990331006, will be suitable for checking the
BTOR_PICKUP values. A standard "Tuesday test" was run on 990331004.

The first plasma attempt was shot 7. The BR_0 had changed substantially from
the last run (990305), and we got a fizzle with about -5mT of radial
field. Shot #8 also fizzled. Small tweaks on Br, IC_EF4, and the gas puff
resulted in robust startups (with no changes) on shot #9-27. Shot #28 fizzled,
probably because of a high gas load following an increase in density (and
terminating sharkfin), and small tweaks to Br and the pre-puff were made for
#29, which ran.

Shots #7-23 were constant pcs programming, as the RF group tuned and
conditioned. The only variation was shot#17, which had a 20msec Kr pulse for
Goetz's impurity experiment. The EDA seemed to be degraded, and the Kr was
turned back off for #18.

Shots #24-29 had the ZCUR and ZXU raised by 4mm so Dmitri could get better
coverage of the H-mode pedestal with the edge Thomson.

Shot #27 and 29 had the target density increased to 1.3e20 (from 1.1) at
BLIP's request (approved by SL). The RF had difficulty coupling on these
shots, so they were both L-modes. Unfortunately, these were the only shots on
which Amanda had requested a tf waggle.

There were some piggyback experiments that made progress today. Among these,
the FSP was observed on the video system, in preparation for the plume imaging
experiment. The omegatron got some data and seems to be working now. Rice was
trying to fire the shit shooter, and succeeded in getting injections into the
limiter/L-mode phase of the discharge. However, he was apparently not
successful during H-mode. The injection on shot 26, originally attributed to
Zr, apparenly wasn't actually his doing.

The I2t detector on the TF was enabled on shot 18, and worked for the
remainder of the run (which is to say it did not stop the tf from running).

We had cell-access delays in the morning for the F-port seal re-torque, and
around noon for re-alignment of the TCI interferometer. We also had two
computer problems resulting in short delays, including a reboot of DAIGLE and
a window manager restart on MHERTZ.

Power Systems ran well all day.

Mar 31 1999 08:37:35:810AMSteve WolfeRun Plan for Wednesday, 990331

MP#214 ICRF Conditioning
SL: Wukitch? (or Wilson)
PO: wolfe

The object of this run is to get the D- and E-port systems up and running,
after numerous modifications and improvements during the recent maintenance
interval. Target plasmas will be fiducial-like 800kA discharges, based on
990224021.

Run is scheduled to start at 08:00AM and end at 5:00PM.

Following the run there will be access to the cell and power room UNDER
CONTROLLED ACCESS only, for approximately 30 minutes. After that, the cell and
power room will be closed overnight for boronization.

Engineering Setup:
------------------

Overnight ECDC in D2, ending at least 1hour before first plasma.

Gas setup:
fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid DISABLED
fill B-side upper with 2 psi of H2 Hybrid DISABLED
fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
fill J-bot with 2 psi of Kr Hybrid DISABLED

We would like the H2 bottle on the machine in case the H/D fraction is too
low. The Neon bottle should be removed and replaced by Hydrogen.
ower Systems as on 990224021.
TF under Hybrid Control

Enable ECE and VUV gate valves (assuming no vacuum problems)

We will be starting with a Tuesday OH test, and then an EFC test.
We may also do a TF-only test to check the Btor_pickup calibration last
done in January.

Run Plan:
---------

Following the power systems tests, run target plasmas for RF.

Load segment 1 from 990305025; Load segment 2 from 990224021 (remove TF jog)

Tweak gaps for RF as indicated. Monitor H/D signal and pulse some H2 if
indicated. We will be aiming for reliable simultaneous high power operation
of the D and E port systems. This is the main purpose of the
run. Piggybacking of other experiments, and alignment/checkout of new
diagnostics, e.g. Z-meter array, will be carried out as long as they don't
interfere with the RF development.

Mar 31 1999 08:38:07:483AMSteve WolfeColdstart run successfully 06:41:39.35
Mar 31 1999 08:24:06:373AM990331001Steve WolfeShot 1: EFC only test - A GA-recommended ECO has been done to one gate drive board. Needs to
be tested.

We are having a seal leak at F-port. It's being purged with Argon. The argon is essentially
the whole base pressure at 1.3e-6.

There was a CAMAC problem this morning, which is claimed to be fixed now.

EFC current trace looks ok.
Mar 31 1999 08:38:57:577AM990331002Steve WolfeShot 2: TF-only test at 50kA for operations. We will be running through a series of tf tests,
since we have been off-line for a while (per Irby).
Ar pressure is now 6e-6!

TF pulse looks good. Ar now down to 3e-6.
Mar 31 1999 08:46:00:407AM990331003Steve WolfeShot 3: 100kA TF test. TF looks ok.
Ar pressure got above 1e-5, then dropped back during INIT.
We may need a cell access to re-torque F-port seal if it doesn't stabilize.
Central column cooling was just started.
Mar 31 1999 08:49:51:403AM990331003Steve WolfeBase pressure is now in the high 5 scale. Some 28 is now showing up on the RGA, along with the
Ar. Tommy will try to re-torque F-port.
Mar 31 1999 09:19:06:873AM990331003Steve WolfeF-port was successfully re-torqued and the seal is now being pumped.
Base pressure is in the low 7 scale. Apparently the blower/heater on f-port was moved or turned down,
and there is a block of ice on one side of the port. Tommy has re-set the blower.

Mar 31 1999 09:24:58:077AM990331004Steve WolfeShot 4: Tuesday OH test. Coax resistances are < .2uohms

Next shot, full current tf-only test.
Mar 31 1999 09:36:30:747AM990331005Steve WolfeShot 5: TF only test.
Data sequence on the last shot took 9 minutes! Josh is checking.

No current. CAMAC wasn't enabled^&*()!
Mar 31 1999 09:46:46:530AM990331006Steve WolfeShot 6: TF only test.
looks good.

Next shot, try for plasma.
Mar 31 1999 10:07:26:733AM990331007Steve WolfeShot 7: First plasma attempt.
All supplies went. NO PLASMA.

fizzle. Br is very negative. -4.5mT.

Next shot, change Br offset from .001 to .005
Mar 31 1999 10:21:30:123AM990331008Steve WolfeShot 8: change Br offset from .001 to .005 (Why is it so different? )
Another fizzle. GOt to 40kA this time. A bouncer.

Br looks better, starts at 0, drops to -.001
Bz looks a little slow. Gas looks a bit low as well.

Mar 31 1999 10:47:40:747AM990331009Steve WolfeShot 9: INcrease pre-puff from 18 to 20msec
Change IC_EF4 from -1285 to -1270
BR_0 from .005 to .0045

plasma full length. Serious hesitation at 52Ka level.
LOoks like it swings way out, then comes back in
RF up to about .1MW
Mar 31 1999 10:51:29:013AM990331010Steve WolfeShot 10: No PCS changes.
Plasma - RF tramping to .5MW.
Both transmitters are running, together.
Startup looks cleaner this time, no hesitation.

EFIT did not run on shot 9. Problem was traced to Bad sequence value in the EFIT action.
Josh had accidentally modified it when he was trying to recover a bad data file.
With Josh's help, recovered the correct sequence expression from an old shot.
It ran ok this time.
Mar 31 1999 11:09:34:670AM990331011Steve WolfeShot 11: No pcs changes. Shit shooter gate valve open; they will inject Sc at 1.1sec
plasma . I see no injection on the 2pi.
One tranmitter is faulting repeatedly, the other stays on. Peak power 1.3MW
looks like some gas evolution from the antenna (density rise)
startup still looks ok.
Mar 31 1999 11:34:15:937AM990331012Steve WolfeShot 12: No changes.
plasma
One transmitter still faulting.
shit shooter injection at 0.3sec; John's mumbling about it penetrating better when it's not
diverted.
Mar 31 1999 11:52:14:373AM990331013Steve WolfeShot 13: No changes. JR adjusted the laser voltage; still firing at 0.3sec

plasma small injections at 0.28 and .54, neither of which is John's.
RF stays on (1 glitch) up to nearly 1MW.
short H-mode at 0.97 sec.
Mar 31 1999 12:08:20:373PM990331014Steve WolfeShot 14: No changes. JR readjusted laser voltage for shit shooter.
plasma - hmode at .85sec; looks EDA
TCI signal goes berserk. Irby has repaired it.

There is a problem on D-port data. No net RF power trace.
Shit shooter injection at .3 sec is back.
Mar 31 1999 12:19:17:717PM990331014Steve WolfeThe interferometer has a problem. Irby and Murray will have to go into the cell.
Meanwhile, Mike and Sergei are in the power room.
Mar 31 1999 01:12:56:950PM990331015Steve WolfeShot 15: TCI repair took about 45 minutes. No PCS changes (probably should raise the pre-puff, but
let it go).

plasma, 2 h-modes, first one seems to have had an injection in it. Still some faulting on the
rf, but not as bad as earlier.
TCI still has a problem.
Slight hesitation at the 52kA level.
Mar 31 1999 01:25:04:840PM990331016Steve WolfeShot 16: No changes.
plasma, h-mode, looks EDA.
RF up to 1.3MW

Next shot, a little Kr for Goetz
Mar 31 1999 01:42:31:560PM990331017Steve WolfeShot 17: Enable J-bot 20msec Kr pulse at .40sec
plasma, h-modes (Bart mode). Prad looks higher, could be the Kr
RF data problem again. Mike says 1.12MW from D, .4 from E.

Turn off the Kr next shot.
Mar 31 1999 01:56:45:670PM990331018Steve WolfeShot 18: Gary and Bill are going to turn on the TF I2t for next shot.
J-bot disabled for next shot.
FSP will fire three times this shot; they will try to see it on video (prep for plume imaging).

plasma, h-mode, nice EDA.
RF just over 1MW.
Sanjay sees the probe (at least twice).
Mar 31 1999 02:13:58:950PM990331019Steve WolfeShot 19: No changes. RF will fire D only for calibration.
plasma, H-mode
Got a nice ski slope ramp on the RF power.
H-mode is late, .92 sec, when Prf is 1MW.
Injection at .6sec. Brian claims it's not his probe.
Mar 31 1999 02:39:26:687PM990331020Steve WolfeShot 20: No changes. Br did look a little bit more negative on 19, but I'm resisting the temptation
to tweak it.

Prior to this shot, DAIGLE had a problem and had to be rebooted.
plasma. H-mode EDA with a couple of injections.
RF up to 1.5MW.

Mar 31 1999 03:02:56:857PM990331021Steve WolfeShot 21: No changes. RF is going to shift the timing of D and E to investigate the E trips.
plasma, h-mode. nice long EDA.

RF up to 1.5MW, some dropouts.
Josh had to kill MHERTZ. Back up now.

Mar 31 1999 03:13:22:700PM990331022Steve WolfeShot 22: No changes
plasma, h-mode. Big injection at .65sec, during the H-mode.
RF gets to 1.7MW, then starts faulting.

RF is blaming the FSP for some RF faults; there's a switch!
Mar 31 1999 03:23:05:233PM990331023Steve WolfeShot 23: No changes.
plasma, h-mode, RF trips.

Next shot, raise the plasma by 4mm for Dmitri.
Mar 31 1999 03:41:58:030PM990331024Steve WolfeShot 24: Raise ZCUR and ZXU by 4mm during the flattop; this is to give Dmitri better coverage of
the pedestal at the top. Both probes disabled this time.

plasma, hmode, RF trips.
RF faults, gets up to 1.5MW,
Looks like the height change worked.
Mar 31 1999 03:51:47:997PM990331025Steve WolfeShot 25: repeat with the raised position.
plasma, hmode, long eda.
Looks like the shit shooter is working again.
RF gets to 1.6MW. Still has one fault episode on E at .58 sec, but FSP wasn't firing.

Mar 31 1999 04:05:58:280PM990331026Steve WolfeShot 26: repeat with the raised position.
Brian wil fire at 0.7sec this time.

plasma, hmodes. Big injection at 0.8sec. JR successfully injected zirconium!
Mar 31 1999 04:31:10:497PM990331027Steve WolfeShot 27: raise density to 1.31, increase gain from 4 to 8, small increase in pg3 voltage
add a tf waggle for Amanda at 0.81 - 0.92
RF moving 100msec earlier.

plasma, rf continually tripping, no hmodes.
Got 1.3e20, sharkfin at the end.

Next shot, same density, D-port moved later (.6sec) and hopefully better tune.
Mar 31 1999 04:40:50:733PM990331028Steve WolfeShot 28: repeat with different rf.
fizzle. gets to 42kA and hits someplace. probably just too much gas load from previous shot.
Br is also a little positive.
Mar 31 1999 04:56:23:590PM990331029Steve WolfeShot 29: Drop Br0 from .0045 to .004; drop pre-puff from 20 msec to 18msec.
plasma, D-port still didn't go, Eport did. No hmode.

End of run.

There will be no runs tomorrow or Friday so that the RF people can work on their system(s).
