FMIT#1 and #2 worked up to their operational limits. FMIT#1 is limited to between 600 - 800 kW because of its 1 MW plate dissipation limitation. FMIT#2 was tested up to 1.4 MW into dummy load without overloading, essentially the transmitter is acting like a voltage limited supply. Into plasma, reflected power can abruptly cause an overload condition. For example 990723003, 1.4 MW was injected into the plasma; however, on the following discharges, the transmitter overloaded at the L->H transition. More reliable operation was achieved at 1.2 MW. Until the anode voltage can be raised, the reliable power will be limited to 1.2 MW. The first significant power from J-port was obtained as well. Power ramps upto 600 kW were obtained from FMIT#3 and upto 150 kW from FMIT#4. More conditioning effort is required to increase the output power and run them simultaneously. |

| Physics operator summary for 990723 EO: Silva, Cochran, Dekow PO: Goetz SL: Wukitch Run 990723 was in support of MP 214 -- RF conditioning. To this end, attempts were made to produce plasmas so that the RF group could get all four antennas operational. It was the best of runs, it was the worst of runs... This run proves without a doubt that the sparker is a good thing. There were no non-power supply duds during today's run. This is in contrast to the three previous runs which were filled with duds that had nice-looking nulls. It was determined before the run that the sparker was not connected. A detailed analysis of runs 990716, 990721, 990722 showed that the sparker was not firing into the vacuum chamber during these runs. Physics operators should familiarize themselves with the "sparker scope" and how to interpret it. If ever the sparker does not work, the "high- prefill" startup developed on 990722017 should be used. The run began with the "high-prefill" startup and it took a few shots to get the prefill pressure and fields correct. Then a string of six full-length shots were produced. The RF group was able to get all four transmitters transmitting into plasma. See the Session Leader's summary for more details. After this though, the run turned ugly. A OH2 power supply failure was followed by a string of plasmas, with some fizzles tossed in, none of which lasted longer than 0.42s (none made it to OH1 crossover). Many things were tried to get past this early disruption including: slowing down CLEARIN, speeding up CLEARIN, slowing down ZCUR, moving RXL out early, holding ZXL up, loading a good shot from 990723, and loading a good segment 2 from 990420009. None of these changes seemed to help at all. In fact, the last two shots had copious amounts of hard x-rays and disrupted right after segment switch. These disruptions remain unexplained. Something happened after the OH2 power supply fault, but I know not what. Engineering, computing, and diagnostics today: The overnight ECDC was stopped on a PEI trip last night at about 10:00P.M. It was determined that the sparker was not connected. Analysis of previous runs shows that it wasn't connected for 990716, 990721, and 990722. A thermocouple module died between shots 2 and 3 which caused the vessel to heat up briefly. The OH2L received a spurious signal and crowbarred before the pulse on one shot. | Jul 23 1999 07:27:54:110AM | Steve Wukitch | Run Plan Transmitters 1 and 2 are coming up nicely, although they may reach their current limit soon. We will pulse them together and improve tuning as we go to get a good, solid pulse. Transmitters 3 and 4 are responding reasonably well and we will bring power on those as we gain better understanding on coupling. When we get good power we will overlap them, and eventually add them to 1 and 2. Reproducible plasmas (!), with minor position (gap and height) adjustments. | |
| Jul 23 1999 11:03:23:700AM | 990723003 | Steve Wukitch | Nice EDA Tranmistters 1 and 2 (D and E) went in nicely for the H mode, total of nearly 2MW. That's basically the maximum achievable in the present situation for 1 and 2. Transmitter 4 was also on later in the shot but still very low power in machine, still attempting to get a good match. 3 not on yet. |
| Jul 23 1999 11:04:14:280AM | 990723004 | Steve Wukitch | Transmitter 2 (E) tripped, we asked for too much. Back down for the next shot. 4 still not a good match. Turn 3 on for next shot. |
| Jul 23 1999 11:55:35:200AM | 990723006 | Steve Wukitch | Transmitter 2 (E) tripped, we asked for too much, the H mode pushed it over its power limit. Back down for the next shot. Transmitter 1 at maximum 600kW, happy :). 4 still not a good match. 3 went in the machine, at very low level. Trying to match them to plasma. |
| Jul 23 1999 12:29:19:250PM | 990723007 | Steve Wukitch | Transmitter 2 (E) tripped, we asked for too much (again), the H mode pushed it over its power limit. Back down for the next shot. Transmitter 1 at maximum 600kW, happy :). 4 getting better. 3 went in the machine, at slightly more in. Trying to match them to plasma. |
| Jul 23 1999 12:33:49:403PM | 990723008 | Steve Wukitch | Transmitter 2 (E) was accidently not enabled. Transmitter 1 at maximum 600kW, happy :). 4 getting better, measurable power in plasma. 3 went in the machine, at slightly more in. Trying to match them to plasma. \RF_POWER_NET is not perfect yet! J3 and J4 are not added properly in the tree. (Time base is wrong for J power) We will fix that probably on monday, we have to modify a procedure in the tree. |
| Jul 23 1999 12:53:35:217PM | 990723009 | Steve Wukitch | Transmitter 2 (E) at maximum 1.2 MW, happy :). Transmitter 1 at maximum 600kW, happy :). 4 mistuned. 3 went in the machine, 0.5MW at end!. Trying to match them to plasma. \RF_POWER_NET is not perfect yet! J3 and J4 are not added properly in the tree. (Time base is wrong for J power) We will fix that probably on monday, we have to modify a procedure in the tree. |
| Jul 23 1999 01:18:02:187PM | 990723010 | Steve Wukitch | Transmitter 2 (E) at maximum 1.2 MW, happy :). Transmitter 1 (D) at maximum 600kW, happy :). 4 mistuned. 3 went in the machine, 0.5MW at end!. Trying to match them to plasma, small arcing on antenna side. \RF_POWER_NET is not perfect yet! | Jul 23 1999 01:38:53:090PM | 990723010 | Steve Wukitch | Transmitter 2 (E) at maximum 1.2 MW, happy :). Transmitter 1 (D) at maximum 600kW, happy :). shorter length to give some room for 3 and 4. 4 mistuned. 3 went in the machine, 0.5MW at end!. Trying to match them to plasma, small arcing on antenna side. Stretched them a little. |
