990730: MP214 -- RF conditioning

Run Plan:

Start by loading 990527003 and make changes in equilibrium as necessary
to satisfy the RF group. If early disruptions continue to be a problem, try
backing off on Ip to 0.7 MA.

After an up-to-helium on 7/28, ECDC in D2 and a bake at 55C was begun on
7/29, and continued until approx 0400 on 7/30.

Results:

The main result from Friday's run was that we no longer
have Fe showing up in the plasma. So we can assume that
we did fix the problem with the up-to-air. However, the
vacuum and wall conditions were simply not adequate to get
good plasma. The water levels on the RGA were very high all
day and were not dropping. Mass 17,18, and 19 in fact composed
nearly the whole basepressure. Plasmas lasting a maximum of 250 ms
were produced before the impurity levels terminated the
discharge, usually after a burst of hard x-rays. Many tweeks were
tried to get full length discharges that may then have helped clean
up the machine. Both the c-side and pre-fill gas levels were adjusted,
EF4 currents were adjusted by 15 amps or so to better null Bz0, a
small Br0 tweek was done early in the run, and for a few shots we
tried reducing the current request from 800 to 450 kA to reduce the
drive. None of these changes allowed up to "break through" to a
full length shot. Operation should be much better next week after
several days of ECDC and a 55 C bake.

Problems:

TF2 breaker had to be replaced after shot 1

A river water inlet temp of 76F required a 20 minute shot cycle
to keep alternator temp in bounds.

An attempt to adjust engineering parameter on shot 2 after INIT
resulted in the loss of one shot. This problem should be fixed
with a software mod to lockout changes after initialization has begun.

We lost some magnetics data on shot 4.

Score:

test/eng problem 2
fizzles 6
plasmas 11

RF conditioning (MP 214)

We will continue our conditioning.

XMTR 1 and 2 (D and E) should come on rapidly
to full available power.

XMTR3 and 4 will be brought online in parallel
and we will atempt to run them together
with significant power. Phase between 3 and 4
will also be diagnosed.

PLasma conditions should remain mostly
the same with some tweaking in gaps, H conc
and so forth.
