MP#214 RF Conditioning

The goal was to get more power out of J-port (FMIT#3 and4) and hopefully run
them simultaneously. Operationally, we are interested in the progress in
cleaning up after last week's vacuum break, as indicated by H/D and CII
levels.

The RF'ers did get 3&4 to run together, for extended periods at low power but
not reliably at interesting power. The power feedback (or lack thereof)
continues to be a problem, as changes in tuning made dramatic differences in
power. D&E also ran ok, at power levels similar to yesterday; these were
turned off after shot #8 to simplify the quest for improved performance on
3&4.

The machine ran well at 1MA, with all plasmas running through to completion
(~1.8sec). At shot#3 the density was raised from 0.9 to 1.1e20, and the target
was left alone for the rest of the day. The H/D ratio was down significantly
from yesterday's run, typically in the range .1 to .2 (compared to up to 0.7
yesterday); CII levels were in the .004-.006 range (peak of breakdown
spike). These values may have come down a little in the course of the day, but
not by much, especially compared to the drop from yesterday with overnight
ECDC.

Out of 21 attempts, there were one fizzle and one power supply induced dud (no
TF), and 19 full length plasmas. First shot was at 8:00AM, and the run was
terminated early, at 16:20, so the RF group could work on the power control
problem.

Problems:
---------
The TF failure on shot 20 is unexplained. Bill Cochran suspects a CAMAC
glitch, since no faults showed up and everything looked ok, and it went fine
on the next try.

RF had to go into the power room after every shot to reset something, because
the CAMAC gate was apparently not working.

There was a long delay (1hr 40min) before shot #4 to repair a pot indicating
position of the #3 phase shifter.

Between shots #15 and 16 an Airborne Express delivery man jerked open the
locked Albany Street door to the power room and walked in, causing an access
breach. He was escorted out of the building and directed to the correct
door. Matt was notified that the lock on this door needs repair again. The
access system acted properly and forced all systems to a safe state in
response to the breach.

Melby identified the 55kHz signal seen on the fast magnetics yesterday as a
modulation on the J4 power. This modulation seems to be unrelated to the power
feedback circuit on FMIT#4, as originally suggested, since it persisted even
when the transmitter was run open loop (shots 17-21).
