| Physics operator summary for run 990816: MP 214 -- RF conditioning SL: Dr. Wukitch, I presume? PO: R. Granetz The goal for today: Continue conditioning the RF. Summary: RF made great progress today. Both J3 and J4 followed their programmed power demand, individually and combined, for the most part. Instantaneous power of 2 MW was injected during the latter shots. There were also numerous examples of very large titanium injections, which must be coming from the J-port antenna. The machine ran very reliably until shot 17, and after that, the fizzle probability rose to nearly 50%, for unknown reasons. Scorecard: 17 plasmas 4 fizzles 1 dud (1 due to lack of one or more power supplies) 2 tests 0 aborted ---------- 24 total ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Engineering Setup for Monday, 990816: Run will begin at 09:00. Setup power supplies from shot 990813008 (1 MA, 5.4 T, flattop to 1.4 s) Two hours of ECDC in D2 prior to the run. Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid enabled fill B-side upper with 6 psi of H2 Hybrid DISABLED fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled leave J-bottom as is Hybrid DISABLED The following gate valves should be enabled, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run Plan for Monday, 990816: MP 214 -- RF conditioning Physics operator: R. Granetz Start from shot 990813008, a 1 MA, 5.4 T, long-flattop discharge. Continue RF development. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: There were two hours of ECDC in D2 prior to this run. Hybrid coldstart done; no errors found ($set default cmod$models:[hybrid.tcl] $@hybinit_dispatch $@show_bitbus_log Use editor search to verify no occurrences of "error" nor "not respond") Load 990813008 (1 MA, 5.4 T, long flattop, nl_04=1.0e20 m-2). Shot 01 -- Test; standard Tuesday morning OH test. Only the OH2's were turned on. Must repeat with OH1. Shot 02 -- Test; standard Tuesday morning OH test. Coax resistances look good. There will be a delay at this point to allow RF access to the power room. Shot 03 -- Plasma. Good shot. 1 MA, 5.4 T, nl_04=1.0-1.2e20 m-2, flattop to t=1.4 s, full rampdown, terminates at t=1.85 s. I think there's a little too much Bz. RF was not enabled. Next shot: change IC_EF4 from -1270 to -1280 amps. Shot 04 -- Plasma. Good shot. Got about 0.5 MW from J4, very little from J3. Right gap=1.1-1.2 cm. Bz looks better. Next shot: decrease outer gap to 1.0 cm. Shot 05 -- Plasma. Good shot. Still almost no power from J3 transmitter. Outer gap=1.0-1.1 cm. Next shot: change fizzle detector turnoff from t=2.2 to 1.7 s There will be a delay at this point to allow RF access to the power room. Shot 06 -- Plasma. Good shot. H2 concentration has been around 4% all morning. Outer gap=1.0 cm. Next shot: return fizzle detector timeout back to t=2.2 s. Shot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. About 1 MW from each of J3 and J4, non- overlapped. Neutrons increase, but no H-modes. There were some big impurity injections during the RF. Outer gap=1.0 cm. Next shot: no changes. Shot 08 -- Plasma. Good shot. About 1 MW from each of J3 and J4, non- overlapped. There are signs of dithering on the H-alpha. Next shot: no changes Shot 09 -- Plasma. Good shot. J3 gave a flat 1.0 MW for 0.2 s, J4 gave a flat 0.67 MW for 0.19 s. RF looks pretty good. Still no H-modes. Next shot: no changes Shot 10 -- Plasma. Good shot, but it was almost killed by a big injection at t=1.15 s. J3 tried for 2 MW, but couldn't stay on steadily. J4 gave about 0.9 MW in a flat, steady pulse. H/D=4-5%. Outer gap=1.0 cm. Still no H-modes. Next shot: no changes. There will be a delay at this point to allow RF access to the power room. Shot 11 -- Plasma. Good shot. No RF. Next shot: no PCS changes. RF turned back on. Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Another big injection at 0.94 s. 1.2 MW from J3 and 0.9 MW from J4, both look pretty steady. No overlap yet. Next shot: no PCS changes Shot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. Another big injection, this time at 0.81 s 1.2 MW from J3 and 0.9 MW from J4, both look pretty steady. No overlap yet. Jim Terry reports that the large injections are NOT molybdenum. Next shot: no PCS changes Shot 14 -- Dud. OH2L faulted before the shot, pulling out the PF breaker. Next shot: try again, no changes Note: Jim Terry and Dimitrios Pappas have determined that the large injections are titanium, which must be coming from the antennas. There will be a delay at this point to check the OH supplies and to allow RF access to the power room. Shot 15 -- Plasma. Good shot. Both J3 and J4 gave 1.2 MW each. Not overlapped yet. No large injection (just some small ones). No Te heating, no H-modes. Outer gap=1.0 cm. H/D=4-5%. Next shot: no PCS changes Jim Terry reports that the (small) injections on this shot consisted of iron and molybdenum. Shot 16 -- Plasma. Good shot. J3 and J4 overlapped for about 0.2 s at low power (0.4 MW from J3 and 0.2 MW from J4). No inpurity injections. Next shot: no PCS changes Shot 17 -- Fizzle. Next shot: reduce EF4 another 5 amps. (from -1280 to -1285 amps). Shot 18 -- Fizzle. Next shot: reduce EF4 another 5 amps. (-1285 to -1290 amps) Shot 19 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=1.5 MW total (from J-port). Dithering, but no H-modes. No big injections. Next shot: no PCS changes. Shot 20 -- Fizzle. Next shot: re-load shot 5. Note: We've filled up the shot disk and will have to wait for Tom Fredian to clear up some space for the next few shots. Shot 21 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=1.5 MW total. There was a big injection around 0.8 s. Current rise looked better than previous few shots. Next shot: no PCS changes Shot 22 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=1.5-2.0 MW. Prad=0.5 MW during the time that Prf=2 MW. Still don't see significant heating. Dimitrios Pappas reports that the Prad is due to molybdenum. Next shot: no PCS changes There will be a delay at this point to allow RF access to the power room. Shot 23 -- Fizzle. Next shot: substract 5 amps from EF4. Shot 24 -- Plasma. Good shot. Several big injections on 2pi bolo. Prf was approx. 2 MW. No heating. End of run. |

| Aug 16 1999 03:31:24:513PM | 990816019 | Rejean Boivin | Shot 019 More power from 3 and 4, about 1 MW from #3 and 0.6 MW from #4 together. The best so far. It seems that we are limited by some power supply in the RF "train". |
| Aug 16 1999 03:55:32:967PM | 990816021 | Rejean Boivin | Shot 021 Increasing power in #4, bringing the total power to close to 2MW together! We are basically at the limit in output power, but there is a few things we can change to increase that. Require access though. |
| Aug 16 1999 04:18:28:030PM | 990816022 | Rejean Boivin | Shot 022 Made it! 2MW together in plasma. That's the milestone for the new J antenna. Approx. 1 MW from each transmitter, for about 100 msec! |
