Physics operator summary for run 990721: PO: D. Mossessian SL. S. Wukitch _________________________________________________ Run plan for 990817: MP 214 -- RF conditioning Start from shot 990816005. Continue RF conditioning. Setup power supplies from shot 990806009 (1 MA, 5.4 T, flattop to 1.4 s) Two hours of ECDC in D2 prior to the run. Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid enabled fill B-side upper with 6 psi of H2 Hybrid DISABLED fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled leave J-bottom as is Hybrid DISABLED The following gate valves should be enabled, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV ____________________________________________________________________ Summary: The goal, as usual, was to get maximum RF power out of J-port. The run was delayed at RF's request and then delayed again because of EF4 problems. The run started around noon. The machine ran well, with all the plasma but one running to ~1.8 sec. When RF power climbs higher than 1MW it seem to produce massive injections. Only one shot, however, disrupted due to an injection. The disruption was followed by a fizzle, resulting from change in Br. Decreasing Br offset produced the desirable result - last shot (990817016) was a good long plasma. Scorecard: 16 shots 4 tests/power supply problems 10 plasmas 2 fizzles ______________________________________________________________________________ 990817001 Shot #1 did not go - UPS shut down and CAMAC had to be reset. No power supplyes on this shot. 990817002 First plasma attempt. RF off. Not successful - EF4 power supply did not go.. 990817003 Problems with EF4. Shot aborted. 990817004 No power shot 990817005 Plasma. RF off. Slight current hesitation at the beginning. Late disruption at 1.8 sec. No PCS changes for next shot. 990817006 RF ON on this shot. Fizzle. Increased Bz by setting EF4 at 0 sec to -1260 A (was -1280 A) (assuming conversion is 15A/mT) 990817007 Plasma. Very large injection at .57 sec, not connected with RF. Increased Ar (Pulse gas 1) to 35 msec (from 30) for next shot. 990817008 Good plasma. 990817009 Increased Ar by another 5 msec for this shot (now 40 msec total) Plasma. Two large injections at .77 and .97 sec, probably associated with RF. 990817010 Plasma. No PCS change. 990817011 Plasma. No PCS change. 990817012 Plasma. No PCS change. 990817013 Set Ar (pulse gas 1) back to 35 msec from 40 msec. Plasma. Divertor bypass open from 1.15 sec. 990817014 Plasma. Disrupted at .79 sec due to RF-caused injection. 990817015 Fizzle. Br went up about 2 mT. Lowered Br offset by 1.5 mT for next shot. 990817016 Plasma. Massive injection coinciding with RF pulse.

Aug 17 1999 09:05:02:983AM		Rejean Boivin	MP 214 Continuing improving reliability of 3 and 4. Yesterday we found saturation in power output from some of the power supplies in the power train. They have been replaced/substituted and we will try to push for more power. We can then move to better understand and control the feedback system. In addition, the power "meters" have been recalibrated and should reflect more adequately the system output. Plasmas should be the same as in recent past.

Second attempt was successful.
