We were successful in demonstrating heating with J-port antenna. Scanning different relative antenna strap current phases, the best heating was observed with [0,pi,pi,0]. Other phases did not result in H-mode and had signficantly more impurity influx, particularly Ti, Mo, and C. The H/D ratio was increasing with RF power and throughout the day. The source may be the TiCN coated Faraday screen. We found that full current disruptions could be avoided by lowering the RF power. A small density scan suggested that the impurity injections were insensitive to density. The antenna operated with lower loading (more like normal D and E-port loading values) with an outer gap at 1.2 cm. The impurity influx appears to require more conditioning to reduce it. |

| Physop Report for Friday, August 20, 1999 SL: S. Wukitch/R. Boivin PO: W. Rowan EO: F. Silva/B. Cochran/G. DeKow The purpose was to continue RF conditioning of J-Port antenna with 1MA 5.2T plasmas (similar to 990818002) and to attempt to optimize heating with J3 and J4 running together (MP 214). Progress toward completion of this MP is described in the Session Leader Summary. Loaded shot 990820999 from cmod$test_shots[hybrid.pcs] to begin the run. This shot was created on 8/19 by Wolfe. It represents the intended changes to 990819001, and would have been shot 990819002 if that shot had been run. This shot is particularly useful as it contains the setup for RF conditioning in segment 1 and the setup for Ohmic H-modes in segment 2. The run began at approx 10 am as planned. Shots 001 through 016 were run without changes and with frequent requests for power room access by RF folk. There were some impurity injections -- apparently from the RF antenna. These seem to be reflected in a small variation in the plasma disruption time (approx 0.010 to 0.020 ms) during rampdown. For a typical shot (006), Jim Terry reported that the injection was composed of Mo and Ti. There were frequent disruptions in the shot range from 017 through 028. The disruptions occurred at about 1 s and were due to impurity injection from the antennas. Larger outer gap may lessen the liklihood of disruption, but this was not clearly demonstrated during the run. The run ended as planned at 6 pm. Engineering Setup Setup power supplies from 990818002 Two hours of ECDC in D2 prior to the run. Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid enabled fill B-side upper with 6 psi of H2 Hybrid DISABLED fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled leave J-bottom as is Hybrid DISABLED Gate valves enabled: ECE, VUV Shot by shot results Shot 001.
