| Run Plan and Engineering Setup forThursday, August 26 1999. SL: Wukitch/Schilling PO: Parker This run will be a replay of that scheduled for Tuesday, August 24, 1999. The general purpose will be to condition the RF antennas. The run is scheduled to start at 12:00 and end at 18:00. The initial setup will be the same as that for shot 990824002. As planned for Tuesday, we will try to bring up E-port/FMIT#2 system. If successful, compare heating and impurity behavior with J port antenna. During the run, we will try to optimize heating from both antennas. Engineering setup: Two hours ECDC in D2 Setup power supplies from 990824002 Gas setup: Same as for 990824002 The following gate valves should be enabled, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV Run Summary: The run was successful from the Phys Ops viewpoint. It began at 12:00 and ended at 18:00. The main purpose was to condition the J-Port antenna, and the plasma shots were not particularly challenging--5.1T, ~ 1 MA, and n ~ 1.0e20. It seems that J-Port antenna still produces copius impurities which can lead to H-Mode termination or disruption. In fact, the last three shots disrupted even though Transmitter 3 either did not pulse or terminated early and Trans- mitter 4 was operated at only 700 kW. The machine ran well, other than the disruptions which were presumably due to the RF. There was one fizzle, which was probably due to a drift in BR to about -1.5 mT. When corrected to BR ~ -0.5 mT, the shot was recovered and no further problems were encountered. At total of 16 shots were produced, with one fizzle and 5 disruptions. There were numerous power room interventions which accounts for the somewhat low shot rate. |

| Aug 26 1999 12:42:02:607PM | 990826002 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826002 For this shot, the density was lowered slightly to 1.0e14. Also, RF was turned on, producing an H-Mode when E-port antenna was energized. Density rose to 2e14. |
| Aug 26 1999 01:01:27:560PM | 990826003 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826003 Continuing with same shot, no changes except RF. Rf peak power ~ 2 MW. |
| Aug 26 1999 01:30:27:827PM | 990826004 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826004 Shot ran as programmed. Problem with transmitter 3, so only half of J-port antenna was energized. Power room intervention required to fix, delay likely to be of order 1 hr. |
| Aug 26 1999 02:16:45:187PM | 990826005 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826005 After some delay, ~ 1/2 hour to fix transmitter 3, shot ran well without changes. On next shot flaps will be open for the entire shot. For shots 1-5 flaps have been closed. |
| Aug 26 1999 02:36:44:280PM | 990826006 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826006 Shot ran as previous shots without change. RCUR was extended to be constant during rampdown beginning with last shot (990826005). No effect during flatop, but current at rampdown disruption reduced. J. Irby requested and was granted cell access to tune laser. |
| Aug 26 1999 03:01:42:483PM | 990826007 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826007 Shot ran well, as has been the case all day (so far!) Flappers were closed for that shot, in case anyone noticed. |
| Aug 26 1999 03:18:06:967PM | 990826008 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826008 Same shot, no changes (except flappers were open. For next several shots flappers will alternate open and closed with successive shots.) RF programming different on J-Port. Constant power rather than ramp. |
| Aug 26 1999 03:46:40:327PM | 990826009 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826009 Shot disrupted at ~1.1 s, due to sudden rise in radiated power. Rf power was only ~ 1 MW from J-Port. E-Port transmitter had tripped out early (~.55 s). RF Group requested and was granted power room access. |
| Aug 26 1999 04:16:44:793PM | 990826010 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826010 E-port transmitter (#2) is finished for the day. During the remainder of the run, only J-port will be energized, as in this shot. Shot shows periodic transition into H-mode, with transitions out apparently caused by impurity accumulation. |
| Aug 26 1999 04:37:51:357PM | 990826011 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826011 Fizzle. BR appears to be too negative, -1.5 mT. 1 mT added to BR program. |
| Aug 26 1999 04:58:28:390PM | 990826012 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826012 Shot recovered. RF transmitter 3 tripped out early. Transmitter 4 produced ~0.6 MW, but plasma nevertheless disrupted near inversion. BR signal didn't update properly, nor did loop voltage. SW looking into it. |
| Aug 26 1999 05:10:23:700PM | 990826013 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826013 Shot ran as programmed, but transmitter 3 did not turn on. Transmitter 4 stayed on at 700 kW, but did not produce H-Mode. |
| Aug 26 1999 05:31:08:937PM | 990826014 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826014 Shot disrupted at ~ 0.95 s. Transmitter 3 shut itself off after reaching about 0.8 MW. |
| Aug 26 1999 05:59:11:233PM | 990826015 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826015 Shot disrupted at ~ 1.2 s. Transmitter 3 did not pulse. Transmitter 4 delivered ~ 700 kW, did not produce an H-Mode. |
| Aug 26 1999 06:06:20:090PM | 990826016 | Ron Parker | Shot 990826016 Shot disrupted again, this time at 0.7 s Transmitter 4 delivered ~ 700 kW, no pwer from T3. |
