Plan:
-----
This run will be a continuation of that scheduled for August 25, 1999.
The general purpose will be to condition the RF antennas. The run is scheduled
to start at 9:00 and end at 17:00.

The initial setup will be similar to that for shot 990902025, but with
flat 1 MA current, nl04=1, right gap = 1-1.2 cm. We will start with
the J-port antenna and transmitters 3 and 4. The emphasis will be on
achieving high-power flattop pulses of long duration, to get the
largest number of joules into the antenna short of faulting or
provoking disruptions. If successful, we will then compare heating and
impurity behavior with different settings of current strap phasing. If
transmitters 1 and/or 2 become available, then power from D- and
E-ports will be added.

Engineering setup:
------------------

Two hours ECDC in D2 prior to run, finishing at least 1 hour before run.

Setup power supplies from 990902025 except change all PF invert times to 2.0

Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid DISABLED
fill B-side upper with 6 psi of H2 Hybrid DISABLED
fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
J-bottom pumped out Hybrid DISABLED

The following gate valves should be enabled, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, PCI

Results:
--------

We had a bit of trouble on the Tuesday OH test. The OH2L supply went to 20kA,
with a PLC setting of 10kA. Supply current read 10kA, but bus rogowski and
shunt agreed that there was 20kA in the coil, and the Br was consistent with
this. Suspicion fell on the optical link connecting the control cabinet with
the supply. After removing and re-installing the fiber, and power cycling the
supply, the problem vanished.

Meanwhile, the RF'ers had requested a delay until approximately 10:30. They
needed to exercise FMIT#3&4 into dummy load, and pulse #1 into vacuum to check
the reflected power monitor, which had been worked on. They also needed to
increase the SF6 pressure in the transmission lines back to the nominal value.

The first plasma attempt (shot#4) took place at 10:45. The PCS programming was
similar to 990902025, except nl04 was set to 1.0e20, RCUR was moved out by
1mm, TF lowered to 142kA, and CLEARIN waveform adjusted slightly for the
1.5sec EOF. There was no RF yet; this was mainly to make sure the rest of the
system is working ok. While the shot went ok, it turns out EF1U was not quite
getting to the programmed current; symptoms were similar to EF1L behavior from
990902, but it never caught up.

The second plasma attempt (shot#5) had 1MW RF (from 3&4). EF1U was apparently
fixed by power-cycling the supply between shots.

Attempts to get power through E-port (FMIT#2) were not successful. Low power
(~100kW) was coupled through D-Port (FMIT#1) beginning with shot #10, and
working up to 0.6MW by the end of the run.

The maximum power through J-port was 1.7-1.8MW, obtained on shot #7.
J3 was somewhat less reliable than J4. Three shots disrupted (#9,12,13) with
serious injections, apparently RF-induced; all occurred when J4 was running
alone after J3 tripped. However, later shots survived even though J3 continued
to trip out.

The last shot (#20) was hit by two very early injections, at 0.17 and
0.47sec, and died before the RF had a chance.

Note that the programming on shot#20 had the TF flattop extended to 1.6 sec,
in an attempt to extend the rampdown just a little further. This shot should
not be used as a starting point for tomorrow's run, since the extra TF heating
would not be worth it, even if it did help the rampdown. There were also minor
rampdown tweaks on shots #16 (RCUR) and 17 (CLEARIN), neither of which made
any difference. Essentially all non-disruptive shots today ramped down to
1.87sec, the same as last Thursday. A 25msec Argon puff was present for shots
#8-20, with no obvious deleterious effects. After the run, I realized that the
fizzle detector may have been taking the plasma out on some shots; if we
really want to ramp all the way down the F.D. off time should be changed to
1.8 or so, instead of 2.2.

Progress was made in getting D-port up to 0.6MW, for the first time in quite a
while. To the untutored eye, little or no progress was made on conditioning of
J-port.

Granetz's CHECK_MAGNETICS program is still not broadcasting to SPANNA
reliably. A message was received after shot #9, but not later in the
run. Looking at the log file indicates it was reporting lots of small baseline
offsets, likely due to the length of the shots. Bob should check the code to
make sure it is compatible with 2sec shots. Somebody (JAS?) should try to
determine why the broadcast messages aren't getting through.

Scorecard:

Sep 8 1999 08:20:19:060AMSteve WolfeChange TF current from 150 -> 142kA for 5.1T, per request of SL.
Sep 8 1999 08:23:35:950AMSteve WolfeRf says they need time to test 3&4 into dummy load.
They also need to test 1 into vacuum, and top off the
SF6 in the line.

We will lock up at the usual time and run the normal
Tuesday test at approx 9AM. There will then be controlled
access until approximately 10:30AM.
Sep 8 1999 08:53:09:137AM990908001Steve WolfeShot #1: Tuesday test.
No OH1. Need to do that again; supply setup wasn't right.
Sep 8 1999 09:10:17:873AM990908002Steve WolfeShot #2: Tuesday test.
OH1 is ok, but OH2L has twice the current?

Both the bus rog and bus shunt say OH2L has 20kA.
PLC is set for 10kA, and supply current claims it
is at 10kA. It looks like a problem in the power
supply current feedback signal.
Sep 8 1999 09:25:43:233AM990908002Steve WolfeShot #3: While I'm waiting, move the EOF CLEARIN point from
1.404 sec to 1.5sec (val=-.006); delay subsequent points by
0.1sec.
Sep 8 1999 09:59:23:717AM990908003Steve WolfeShot #3: Another Tuesday test, to check if the OH2L supply is fixed.
Looks ok.

Sep 8 1999 10:54:28:373AM990908004Steve WolfeShot #4: First plasma attempt. No RF on this one, but check
other stuff is ok.

plasma to 1.87sec; Startup ok, maybe a little inside;
density is climbing during pulse, up to 1.27 by
1.5sec; outer gap looks good at ~11mm.

RF will need more time to get ready.
Next shot: remove PG3 feedforward after 0.6sec.
Sep 8 1999 11:33:09:310AM990908004Steve WolfeShot #4: On closer examination, it looks like EF1U is not
reaching the programmed current. It looks like the hybrid
demand is not being reflected by the gate drive.
Sep 8 1999 12:38:16:733PM990908005Steve WolfeShot #5: Try for a shot with RF. Gary and Frank power-cycled the EF1U,
but did not reseat the gate board.

plasma same length. EF1U behaved this time.
H-modes from 1.2 - 1.38sec
Got some RF: 1MW total from 3&4.
Some hesitation, Br looks a bit negative; so does Bz, but
plasma isn't far outside - there is one small bounce on H-alpha
and some early hard-xrays.

NINJA D2 pulse apparently went, although the widget says it was
turned off. Density is still climbing before the H-mode.

Next shot: INcrease Br_0 by .0005T (from 0 to .0005) and
IC_EF4 from -1285 -> -1275A
Sep 8 1999 12:50:58:093PM990908006Steve WolfeShot #6: INcrease Br_0 by .0005T (from 0 to .0005) and
IC_EF4 from -1285 tp -1275.

plasma, h-modes, RF.
Stil a slight hesitation, but nothing obviously wrong.
H-mode from 1.0-1.29sec; got rid of the early hards.
RF to 1.5MW from 3&4.
No NINJA puff this time. Density looks similar up till the H-mode.

Next shot: No PCS changes; RF will try for #2 as well.
Sep 8 1999 01:07:27:170PM990908007Steve WolfeShot #7: No PCS changes; RF will try for #2 as well.
plasma - H-mode starts at .7, H-L (with ITB; Rn>1.e13) at .93,
second H-mode at 1.08

Up to 1.7MW from J-port, nothing from E-port.
NINJA supposedly puffed.

Next shot: turn on some Ar for Goetz.

Sep 8 1999 01:32:59:733PM990908008Steve WolfeShot #8: Put a 25msec pulse on PG1 (b-side lower) at .3sec,
and enable B-side lower valve.

plasma, lots of h-modes from .7-1.4sec; radiation is high.
Nearly 1.8MW from J, 5kW from D, nothing from E.
Hesitation is worse, maybe Bz now a little positive.

Next shot: No PCS changes
Sep 8 1999 01:46:08:437PM990908009Steve WolfeShot #9: No PCS changes
disruption at .82sec, looks like an injection.
RF only got to .8MW (J4 only, J3 faulted.
Sep 8 1999 01:54:01:810PM990908009Steve WolfeShot #9: No PCS changes
disruption at .82sec, looks like an injection.
RF only got to .8MW (J4 only, J3 faulted.

Hesitation is a little worse.
Next shot: Drop prepuff from 18->16msec.
Sep 8 1999 02:07:40:060PM990908010Steve WolfeShot #10: Decrease pre-puff from 18->16msec
plasma, L-mode; 0.9MW mostly J4, .1MW from D; J3 faults early.
hesitation is gone.

Next shot: No PCS changes.
Earl is delaying the NINJA puff to ~1.45
Sep 8 1999 02:26:21:467PM990908011Steve WolfeShot #11: No PCS changes. Earl is delaying the NINJA puff to 1.45s
plasma, h-modes, up to 1.5MW from 1,3,4; #3 is still tripping.
slight hesitation.

Next shot: No PCS changes.
Sep 8 1999 02:44:40:030PM990908012Steve WolfeShot #12: No PCS changes.
disruption at .85sec, injection.
.6MW from J4, no J3, .06 from D

Sep 8 1999 03:05:43:750PM990908013Steve WolfeShot #13: No PCS changes.
Another disruption, about the same time
Same RF, about .7MW mostly from J4.
Sep 8 1999 03:25:09:480PM990908014Steve WolfeShot #14: No PCS changes.
full plasma with h-modes.
1.7MW total, with 0.1 from D, 1 from J3, .6 from J4.
Radiated power still very high (foil 2pi says 2.1MW)

Sep 8 1999 03:34:41:717PM990908015Steve WolfeShot #15: No PCS changes.
plasma, h-modes start at 1sec,P_rf=1.1MW, J3 tripping.
D gets to ~.25MW
Sep 8 1999 03:55:37:013PM990908016Steve WolfeShot #16: Hold RCUR further out after 1.7sec (just playing with
the rampdown a little).

plasma, no change in pulse length; h-modes 1.08-1.25
1.3MW, D=.4,J4=.9; J3 faults early, d trips out at H-L.

Sep 8 1999 04:17:07:967PM990908017Steve WolfeShot #17: Don't ramp CLEARIN in as much after 1.7 sec.
Eric removed the feedforward jumper from the the control on #1.

plasma, same length. Short H-modes 1-1.17sec

Sep 8 1999 04:37:51:903PM990908018Steve WolfeShot #18: No PCS changes
plasma, h-modes, D~.5MW, J3 faulting, J4~.8MW
Little hard xray dump early (.14sec)
Sep 8 1999 04:49:17:233PM990908019Steve WolfeShot #19: No PCS changes (resist the temptation to tweak Bz)
plasma, h-modes, hard xrays are gone.
D~.6, J3 still tripping, J4 to .8MW

Next shot: Extend TF flattop to 1.6 sec
Sep 8 1999 05:20:40:140PM990908020Steve WolfeShot #20: Extend TF flattop to 1.6 sec (last attempt to extend rampdown past 1.9sec)
NOTE: DO NOT USE THIS SHOT AS STARTING POINT FOR TOMORROW.

Early disruption; big injection at 0.17sec almost kills it,
then a second one at .47 finishes it off. Didn't make it to the RF.
Sep 9 1999 08:52:01:123AM990908020Jim TerryBased on observation of the Na-like Fe and Ni lines at
335.5 A and 320.5 respectively, the problems on this shot
seem to be due to Fe and Ni influx. It was not Mo.
