MP#241 - "Impurity Concentrations in EDA H-Mode Plasmas"

The primary goal of this mini-proposal was to measure the impurity
concentrations in EDA H-mode plasmas. The concentrations were measured
using passive x-ray and VUV spectroscopy. This run was carried out
immediately after a boronization and the plasmas were extremely
clean relative to pre-boronization levels. Z_eff (Z_70_yag) was 1.2-1.25.
The E and D antennas were used for auxiliary heating.
RF powers varied from 0.9 to 2.2 MW.
EDA H-modes were achieved on all full-length plasmas after shot 006.
The H-factor was typically 1.6. During the EDA H-mode phase,
the radiated power as measured by the 2pi foil bolometer
typically increased from 400 to 950 kW, while the power as measured by
the 2pi diode bolometer increased from 50 to 250 kW. (This was for
input powers of ~2.6 MW.) Ar was puffed except on shots 015 and 016
and accounts of ~20% of the radiated power increase during H-mode. If we take the
foil and diode bolometers at face value, then ~300 kW (55%) of the power loss
brought about by EDA is from neutrals, while 80-100 kW (20%) is from Ar. The rest
(100-150 kW) is probably accounted for by B and F. This requires further
quantitative analysis.

The run was successful in accomplishing the following goals:
1) reproducible, clean EDA H-modes with moderate confinement
were obtained,
2) the following impurities were measured
Ar (x-ray and VUV)
B (H-like and Li-like)
F (recombination on fully stripped and Li-like)
C (Li-like)
O (Li-like)
Mo (Na-like and Ne-like)
Fe (Na-like)
3) these plasmas were quite clean - Zeff was 1.22 typically
- there was very little Mo, C, and O.
- nitrogen levels were too small to be observed.

Setup:
Toroidal Field: 5.4 T (with a B_t jog on some shots)
Plasma Current: 1.0 MA
Working gas species: D2

Bring up the power on the D and E port RF systems, until we achieve
reproducible EDA H-Modes with total RF power exceeding 2 MW.

If this is successful, turn the run over to
MP#241 EDA Impurities with Jim Terry as shot leader.


Engineering setup:

*** Boronization, followed by Helium ECDC until approximately 6:00 am. No
deuterium ECDC before the run. ***

Setup power supplies from 990908004

Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid enabled
fill B-side upper with 6 psi of H2 Hybrid DISABLED
fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
leave J-bottom as is Hybrid DISABLED

The following gate valves should be enabled, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV.

We boronized last night, 9/13, and used 114 psi of diborane
for an average deposition of 1667 Angstroms. Boronization
was followed by 4.25 hours of helium ECDC at 5e-5 Torr.
The ECDC resonance was scanned to the outer wall.


Results:

This was a successful run. Impurity and radiated power levels were low, and
every plasma after shot 5 went into EDA H-Mode. There were occasional impurity
injections, but nothing that caused any problems. The RF ran reliably, typically
at 1.7 MW total out of transmitters 1 and 2, with relatively few trips. There
were also a number of shots with RF power ramps up to 2.3 MW. H-factors were
reportedly in the vicinity of 1.6, with neutron rates above 1e13/s.

The run was shifted to MP241 starting with shot 7.

Startup was reliable, with no problems following the boronization. Shot 9 was a
fizzle. A 15 amp increase in the EF4 preprogram before breakdown was
implemented for shot 10, and there were no further startup problems. All
plasmas that got past 60 kA ran full length.


Problems:

Shot 11 suffered a magnetics TRAQ3 timing problem; data were recovered out to
1.3 seconds.

Shot 17 was a dud, with various power supplies missing in action, including the
TF.

There was a data system hang before shot 24, which caused a minor delay.
