Physics operator summary for run 991019:

MP 214 -- ICRF commissioning

SL: S. Wukitch
PO: R. Granetz

Summary: By the end of the day, significant power was coming out of all the
transmitters and antennas. Prf transiently surpassed 4 MW on
several shots. Significant molybdenum was also being generated.
The H/D ratio was noticeably increased by puffing H2 through the
B-side-upper valve with a plenum pressure of 10 psi and a pulse
length of 0.3 s.

It was also discovered that reliable TF magnet resistance readings
could be obtained by making the measurements during a 50 kA flattop
immediately after the end of the plasma. The TF programmed rampdown
and control settings for shots 10-14 are therefore very different
from normal practice.

Scorecard: 8 plasmas
0 fizzles
1 dud (0 due to lack of one or more power supplies)
4 tests
1 aborted

Engineering Setup for Tuesday, 991019:

Run will begin at 10:00.
Setup power supplies from shot 991018019 (0.8 MA, 5.4 T, flattop to 1.5 s)

Two hours of ECDC in D2 prior to the run.

Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid enabled
fill B-side upper with 6 psi of H2 Hybrid DISABLED
fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
leave J-bottom as is Hybrid DISABLED

The following gate valves should be enabled, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV

Run Plan for Tuesday, 991019:

MP 214 -- ICRF commissioning

Session leader: S. Wukitch
Physics operator: R. Granetz

Load shot 991018019, with no changes, at least to begin with. Later on, we
may go to 1.0 MA.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: There were two hours of ECDC in D2 prior to this run.

Hybrid coldstart done; no errors found
($set default cmod$models:[hybrid.tcl]
$@hybinit_dispatch
$@show_bitbus_log
Use editor search to verify no occurrences of "error" nor
"not respond")

Load 991018019; no changes

Shot 01 -- Test. Data cycle test; no power.

Shot 02 -- Plasma. Good shot. 0.8 MA, 1.0e20 m-2, flattop to t=1.5 s,
rampdown to t=1.87 s. Prf <= 1.8 MW total, from D, J3, and J4.
Short H-modes from t=1.2-1.4 s. H/D spectrometer was looking at
calibration lamp on this shot...ignore the processed signal.
Prad approaches 2 MW during the H-modes.

There will be a delay to allow access to the RF power systems.

Next shot: Steve Wukitch needs Ip flattop to be really, really
flat (it's drooping by 35-40 kA). Program in a 40 kA ramp to
try and compensate.

Shot 03 -- Plasma. Good shot. Plasma current varies only about +/- 10 kA
during the flattop. Prf <= 3 MW total, from D, J3, and J4.
Short H-modes from t=1.2-1.4 s. Prad approaches 3 MW during
H-modes. H/D is valid again.

Next shot: reduce Btor from 5.4 to 5.2 tesla (Itf=144.4 kA)

Shot 04 -- Test cycle with no power; First attempt hung.

Shot 05 -- Plasma. Good shot. J-port worked really well, executing 3 steps
up to 2.0 MW, each step lasting 0.3 s. D-port gave 1.5 MW as
well. H-mode from t=1.2-1.4. Prad again reaches almost 3 MW.
Lots of core x-ray emission.

Next shot: TF-only test at full current (disable fizzle detector).

Shot 06 -- Test. TF-only, at full current (144.4 kA) under hybrid control.
Resistances are still increasing. TF took longer than normal to
reach flattop.

Next shot: Plasma. Puff in H2. Set B-side-upper pulse at 300 ms.
(H2 pressure is 6 psi.)

Shot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. Two short H-modes. J-port didn't do as well
as the previous shot. There was a small increase in H/D, with
timing that matches the programmed H2 puff. Jim Terry puffed helium
through the NINJA.

Next shot: TF-only test under PLC control.

Shot 08 -- Test. TF-only, at 50 kA, under PLC control.

Shot 09 -- Test. Shot cycle with no power...to get TF scanner data.

Next shot: Plasma and TF test. The plasma will be at 5.2 tesla, and
will be immediately followed by a 50 kA TF test. Fizzle detector
will be moved to t=1.5 s, to prevent it from turning off hybrid
control during the extended TF rampdown. The PLC TF invert time
will also be delayed to t=3.3 s for the same reason. The 50 kA
flattop will be from t=2.65 to 3.25 s.

Shot 10 -- Dud! Fields are not much different from earlier plasmas. Gas
was okay.

Next shot: reduce BR by 0.5 mT, and reduce (i.e. make more negative)
EF4 by 15 amps.

Shot 11 -- Plasma. Good shot. Similar to previous plasmas today, except the
E-port antenna was turned on also, and gave 1.3 MW. Btor rampdown
to 50 kA level after the shot took longer than expected, so the
50 kA flattop went from t=2.90 to t=3.25. There was a noticeable
increase in H/D. It peaked at 8% at t=0.6 s, and then remained
at 5% for the rest of the shot.

Next shot: program the TF to rampdown a little faster after the
end of the plasma, in order to a longer flattop at 50 kA.

Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Similar to previous shot. Prf transiently
surpassed 4 MW. TF flattopped at 50 kA from t=2.8 to 3.3 s.

Next shot: stretch the 50 kA TF flattop to t=3.6 s. Set PLC TF
invert at t=3.65 s.

Shot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. Similar to previous shot. TF flattopped at
50 kA from t=2.9 to 3.6 s.

Next shot: repeat with no changes.

Shot 14 -- Plasma. Disrupted at end of flattop. PF and TF crowbarred.

End of run.
