Run summary for 991029, MP218, Impurity Transport Coefficient Profiles in
EDA H-mode

The purpose of this run was to determine the profiles of the impurity
diffusion coefficient and convection velocity during EDA H-mode. Complete
radial brightness profiles for He-like, Li-like and Be-like calcium
lines were obtained, in addition to a few time histories for
Na-like calcium and Li-like fluorine, following a sequence of CaF2
injections. Bolometer and edge x-ray profiles were also collected.
This should allow for a complete characterization of the impurity transport
coefficient profiles. Unfortunately, these were not very good EDA H-modes,
with H factors slightly above 1, since the walls were not boronized and
the molybdenum and total radiated power levels were very high.

Run began at 08:00 and ended at 16:00

Setup power supplies from shot 990924005 (0.8 MA, 5.4 T, flattop to 1.5 s,
extended Bt flattop at 50 kA), EXCEPT MOVE FIZZLE DETECTOR OFF TIME TO 1.7 s

Following a D2 backfill to 500 Torr for edge TS calibration we did
ECDC from 22:00 to 06:00 in D2 at 2.e-4 Torr

Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid enabled
fill B-side upper with 10 psi of H2 Hybrid DISABLED
fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled

No argon, enabled ECE, VUV, and pellet injector


Summary:

The run went extremely well from the machine operation point-of-
view with 24 plasmas out of 24 attempts (one early disruption
on shot 991029023). The RF performed painlessly and consistently
except for the first shot of the day. Tweeks were made in the
outer gap to increase the antenna loading and eliminate the
trips associated with an overvoltage at the antenna. A tweek
was needed early in the run of CLEARIN to keep improve rampdown.
A 16 minute PLC timer could have replaced the PO after the
first few shots.

An interesting finding was that the TF ramp put in for the
ECE seemed to have resulted in RF faults. The ramp took the
TF current from -150 to -158 kA. Changing the ramp to -150
to -142 kA seems to have fixed the fault and actually reduced
the reflected power.

The major physics goals of mp218 were accomplished though with
less than ideal EDAs compared to the 990924 run.
The earlier run had both more RF power and probably
better boronization.

Problems:

. still have drift in TCI CO2 laser alignment

. No #1 RF for first shot because of blown chip in screen
current rollback board.
