- Test engineering systems to return to normal field configuration.
- Test 3 and 4 (J) into dummy load for proper operation.
- Recover normal plasma operation after boronization.

Shot Schedule:

1. compare D, J-port (0,pi,0,pi,), J-port (0,pi,pi,0), J3, J4 at moderate power levels
0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 MW
each step is 0.27 sec (5 good shots) 2. compare J-port (0,pi,0,pi,), J-port (0,pi,pi,0), J3, J4 at moderate power levels in
H-mode
D-port at 1.4 MW (4 good shots)

3. with J-port (0,pi,0,pi,) and D at constant power, scan B 4.4 T,
4.8 T, 5.2 T, and 5.6 T (4 good shots)

4. with J-port (0,pi,0,pi,) and D at constant power, scan outer gap
1.4, 1.0, and 0.6 cm. (3 good shots)

5. with J-port (0,pi,0,pi,) and D at constant power, scan Ip 0.6, 0.8,
1.0 and 1.2 MA. (4 good shots)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

021 early disruption 0.32 sec

next shot: D-port: step up to 1 MW
J-port : step up to 1 MW

022 plasma
BT = 5.4 T
only J4 fired
J3 retried 9 times and D was missing a Kalmus

next shot: decrease BT to 5.2 T and run D-port only with ~100 msec ramp on J-port

024 plasma- EDA at 750 kW
BT = 5.2T

next shot: retune and get D-port baseline

025 plasma- EDA at 750 kW
BT = 5.2T
only one fault on J-port

next shot: give up on the D-port baseline
J-port only with D-port on at 1.4 sec

026 plasma
faulting on #3 at 0.5 MW step
D-port only after 1.4
imputities on stepup to 1 MW from J-port

next shot: repeat

027 plasma
good shot for comparison (0,pi,0,pi,0)
impurities are much lower but no H-mode

**********
Summary
**********

1. Magnetic field tests were successful

2. FMIT#3 and #4 were successfully tested into dummy load.

3. Plasma operation was successfully resumed.

Began shot plan, we succeeded in getting a good shot with J-port at
(0,pi,0,pi). The D-port comparison shot was complicated by the EDA
H-mode at 750 kW. The H fraction was around 3% which is too low.
Tomarrow we should include a H gas puff to increase the H fraction.

Run 991108 in support of MP214: RF Conditioning

EOs: Silva, Cochran
PO : Irby
SL : Wukitch

Run will BEGIN at 09:00 and END at 17:00

MP225: Determination of Mo Source, will ride along as possible.

FMIT#3 and FMIT#4 should be made ready for operation.
FMIT#1 should be warmed up and ready to go when needed.

Run will begin with power tests to make sure the bus and instrumentation
are back into "normal" mode.

Setup power supplies from shot 991029024. This shot was a 5.4 T, 800 kA
discharge, with a 1.5 s flattop. Programming will be modified to run
the TF at 5.2 T.

We will continue with 50 kA backporch on TF pulse.

ECDC in Helium over the weekend at 2.0e-4 Torr. Two hours of ECDC in D2
at 2.e-4 Torr before the run (stopped by 08:00).

Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid DISABLED
fill B-side upper with 10 psi of H2 Hybrid DISABLED
fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled

Enable ECE and VUV

Summary:

Since the bus is now back in the normal direction, we started
the run doing test shots on OH1, OH2U, and OH2L. All okay, but
run was slowed down because of a problem in the Alternator.
After a bad timer was replaced we successfully finished the
power tests and began plasma shots. FMIT#3 and FMIT#4 were
tested into the dummy load and then switched into the j-port
antenna while the tests were going on.

The first plasma attempt (21) resulted in a 0.327 second long
plasma with a couple of injections. A repeat shot resulted
in a nice long plasma. After a fizzle on shot 23, all remaining
shots produced a good plasma.

RF transmitters were coming back online during the run and should
be in good shape for tomorrow. Made some adjustments to RCUR
to keep the outer gap at 8 mm or so during h-mode.

Problems:

A bad timing relay in the exciter protection circuitry caused
a several hour delay in the run today. The timer was supposed
to extend the exciter on time well past the exciter supply
rampdown.

Lots of CAMAC errors during INIT on last two shots

TCI CO2 laser power very low.

Score:

27 shot cycles

20 tests
1 fizzle
6 plasmas
