Run 991109 in support of MP214: RF Conditioning
MP225: Determination of Mo Source, will ride along as possible.

Run will BEGIN at 09:00 and END at 17:00

FMIT#3 and FMIT#4 should be made ready for operation.
FMIT#1 should be warmed up and ready to go when needed.

Setup power supplies from shot 991108024. This shot was a 5.2 T, 800 kA
discharge, with a 1.5 s flattop. We will continue with 50 kA backporch on TF pulse.

Two hours of ECDC in D2 at 2.e-4 Torr before the run (should be stopped by 08:00).

Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid DISABLED
fill B-side upper with 10 psi of H2 Hybrid DISABLED
fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled

Enable ECE and VUV.

Evaluate effect of gap, current, plasma shape on impurity production.

Shot Schedule:

1. compare D, J-port (0,pi,0,pi,), J-port (0,pi,pi,0), J3, J4 at moderate power levels
0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 MW
each step is 0.27 sec

2. compare J-port (0,pi,0,pi,), J-port (0,pi,pi,0), J3, J4 at moderate power levels in H-mode
D-port at 1.4 MW
(4 good shots)

3. with J-port (0,pi,0,pi,) and D at constant power, scan B 4.4 T, 4.8 T, 5.2 T, and 5.6 T

4. with J-port (0,pi,0,pi,) and D at constant power, scan outer gap 1.4, 1.0, and 0.6 cm.

XMTR 3 didn't make it, bad tune.

Summary
**********
We accomplished points 1, 5, and 6 minus 0,pi,pi,0 phase information.
The basic conclusion is that the impurity production is power density
dependent. The working definition of power density limit is the power
density at which an injection event occurred. The limit is about 650
kW/strap pair. Changing the SOL density scale length by increasing
plasma current did not affect the observed power density limit.
Repeated discharges at the limit did not show an improvement and had
repeatable disruptions. We did not continue with the H-mode testing
because D-port was missing an important signal required for tuning.

The machine ran well today. We accomplished step 1, and most of step 5. D-port
lost some tuning information, so it was shut down after shot 15. We
encountered some disruptivity (2/3) at 1.2MA in ramp-down. Step 6 (raising the
power) was tried on shots 22-25, with no great success (they all disrupted,
earlier each shot.)

We had one post-disruption fizzle (shot 8). Thereafter, I tried reducing the
pre-puff from 18->16msec following disruptions. I don't know if it helped, but
we had no more fizzles.

We continued to lose shots to a gremlin in the alternator, which caused us not
to be able to ramp up the excitation. Apparently, a breaker was pulling after
the shots, and not getting reset. In the course of diagnosing this problem, it
was discovered that the excitation supply was single-phasing in inversion. It
is not clear whether these phenomena are related.

H2 was puffed on shots 6-9. Due to a mis-communication, it was turned off from
12-19, and the Ar turned on instead. It was put back for 20-22, then turned
off intentionally for 23-25.
