The Plasma Technology Division has adapted and applied fusion plasma research and technology expertise to a variety of waste processing and pollution reduction applications.

Microplasmatron fuel converter (plasmatron)

The microplasmatron fuel converter (plasmatron) is a device that would be used on a vehicle to transform gasoline or other hydrocarbons into hydrogen rich gas. This transformation would reduce pollution and dependence on fossil fuel.

Fusion Plasma Diagnostics

High-power collective Thomson scattering (CTS) using millimeter-wave gyrotron beams is under development as a diagnostic of fast ions in magnetically confined fusion plasma experiments. 

Millimeter-Wave Nuclear Waste Glass Melter Measurements

New real-time sensors for characterizing molten glass in high level waste (HLW) and low activity waste (LAW) melters are under development. Millimeter-wave technology is being applied to the simultaneous measurement of temperature, conductivity, and viscosity for the first time.
