New efficient methods are developed for the determination of the confined fraction of beam ions in standard and spherical tokamaks. The particle motion is described in the guiding center approximation and finite Larmor radius effects are included in the determination of the prompt orbit losses. A new code, CONBEAM, utilizes these methods and provides rapid evaluation of the beam confinement. Losses due to nonadiabatic changes in the magnetic moment are also evaluated. Due to the conservation of the canonical angular momentum, it is shown that changes in magnetic moment will not lead to a significant reduction in the confinement of co-injected beam ions. ©2003 American Institute of Physics.
