The ionosphere is a natural plasma laboratory surrounding our planet, where fields, waves, turbulence, and plasma neutral coupling unfold across a wide range of scales and driving conditions. This talk will offer a guided tour of key questions and opportunities in ionospheric physics at the heart of ongoing work at MIT Haystack Observatory. Rather than a deep dive into any single topic, the focus is on the big picture and the plasma physics that links theory, simulation, and measurement. We will discuss open problems in plasma neutral coupling, radio refraction and scattering as diagnostics, as well as the modeling and measurement of plasma irregularities. The aim is to catalyze conversations and seed ideas for collaborative projects that connect diagnostics, computation, and theory by leveraging shared methods and tools across the space and fusion communities.
